Ally Introduces Fun, Futuristic Children’s Book to Help Teach Kids About Money

SOURCE:Ally Financial

SUMMARY:

  • Free digital book to cultivate financial education for families with children
  • Ally volunteers and customers aim to read to 10,000 kids this April

DESCRIPTION:

DETROIT, March 31, 2017 /3BL Media/ - In honor of Financial Literacy Month this April, Ally, a leading provider of digital financial services, has launched a new children’s book that uses a fun and futuristic storyline to teach money skills and concepts to kids ages 6-10. The book, called “Planet Zeee and the Money Tree,” is available for download beginning this month along with tips and resources to help parents talk to their kids about money. The new materials for families with children are an extension of Ally’s Wallet Wise program, which provides financial education courses and tools to help consumers of all ages better manage their money.

“Ally believes that learning about money and building good habits from an early age can help young people make smarter money choices and feel more empowered over their personal finances and their lives in the future,” said Jacqueline Howard, director of corporate citizenship at Ally. "We developed the book ‘Planet Zeee and the Money Tree,’ along with resources for parents because we care deeply about the financial well-being of families with children.”

A recent survey conducted online by Harris Poll, on behalf of Ally, found families may need more tools and resources to help educate their kids about money.  The survey found that while 83 percent of parents believe saving money is one of the most important money skills children should learn, and more than half (56 percent) think it’s important for them to learn to avoid impulse purchases, only a paltry 13 percent of parents said they regularly talk to their children about money and/or financial matters. Survey results also revealed that 76 percent of parents said they would be interested in free resources to help them talk to their kids about money.

Ally’s “Planet Zeee and the Money Tree” was developed to help address these concerns, with a narrative that reinforces basic financial concepts. The book follows the story of three children from another planet that come down to Earth and are immediately perplexed about how money is earned and used. The colorful characters meet children from Earth who explain this strange green paper, its value, and teach them more about how money is earned and why it’s important to save and give back.

Ally is taking a grassroots approach to introduce the book to families with children during Financial Literacy Month, mobilizing groups of employee volunteers and its network of auto dealer customers to read to kids. By helping organize local reading events at schools, libraries and businesses throughout the country, Ally plans to reach its goal of reading to 10,000 kids by the end of the month.

The “Planet Zeee and the Money Tree” digital book is available at www.allywalletwise.com and on Ally’s social channels on Facebook and Twitter (@AllyFinancial).

Survey Methodology: This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Poll on behalf of Ally from March 20-22, 2017 among 2,237 U.S. adults ages 18 and older, among whom 627 are parents of children under 18. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.

Delos™ and Overbury and Morgan Lovell Form Strategic Alliance to Integrate Health and Wellness Into the Built Environment

SOURCE:Delos

DESCRIPTION:

NEW YORK, March 31, 2017 /3BL Media/ – Delos™, a wellness real estate and technology firm, today announces a strategic alliance with Overbury PLC and Morgan Lovell PLC, two of the United Kingdom’s foremost office design, fit out and refurbishment firms, to accelerate the transformation of indoor environments into spaces that promote human health and wellness. As part of the new relationship, Overbury and Morgan Lovell will demonstrate a commitment to supporting the continued global reach of the WELL Building Standard™ (WELL), which is the world’s first building standard focused exclusively on the effects of the built environment on human health and wellness.

“Overbury and Morgan Lovell are demonstrated leaders in the commercial office market known for their commitment to green building,” said Delos Founder and CEO Paul Scialla. “By providing healthy building guidance to the corporate community, Overbury and Morgan Lovell will continue to create offices of the future that support employee health, wellness, and productivity. Given 90 percent of the costs of a building are the people inside of that building, the prospects for return on investment for employers are significant.”

As part of the alliance, Overbury and Morgan Lovell will professionally accredit at least 6 employees through the WELL Accredited Professional (WELL AP™) program, which signifies advanced knowledge in human health and wellness in the built environment and specialization in WELL, over the next year. Given two of the firms’ environmental and sustainability managers were among some of the first WELL Accredited Professionals in the UK last year, the new agreement and additional accreditations will continue to strengthen Overbury and Morgan Lovell’s ability to provide clients with tools to realize the benefits of WELL and guide current and future projects toward WELL Certification.

Overbury and Morgan Lovell have also committed to facilitating a quarterly WELL forum to share best practice, guidance and training with its supply chains - the first of which was hosted in London in March 2017 to great success.

“As early adopters of the wellness agenda and WELL philosophy, we’re delighted to announce our alliance with Delos today,” said Chris Booth, Group Managing Director of Overbury and Morgan Lovell at Overbury and Morgan Lovell. “These days it’s not unusual for people to spend more time in the office than at home, which is why we’re so dedicated to promoting wellbeing to our clients, consultants and supply chains to create workspaces with occupiers in mind. Wellness is becoming more mainstream in the UK and we’re proud to be surrounded by like-minded real estate professionals who see the value in such a standard.”

Overbury and Morgan Lovell are part of Morgan Sindall Group PLC – a leading UK construction and regeneration group with revenue of c£2.6 billion.

WELL is third-party certified through IWBI’s collaboration with GBCI, which administers 10+ billion square feet of LEED buildings globally, so that WELL can work seamlessly with LEED and other green building certification programs.

Notes to Editor

Case study
Overbury is proud to be fitting out one of the earliest office schemes in the UK to simultaneously target a WELL Certification and a BREEAM Refurbishment & Fit Out (RFO) 2014 rating. In November 2016, IWBI and BRE announced an agreement to pursue alignments between WELL and BREEAM that will make it easier for projects pursuing both standards.

Currently on site, the 265,000 sq ft fit out includes construction works to the basement and lower ground floor, as well as finishes to the main reception, client floors, and the workspace and amenities floors at One New Street Square, which global financial advisory firm Deloitte has taken on a 20-year pre-let.

Deloitte already occupies numerous buildings at the New Street Square campus so the works will also include the installation of two link bridges to connect One New Street Square with the adjacent building, Two New Street Square. Completion of the Overbury fit out is anticipated in December 2017, with Deloitte aiming to occupy its expanded headquarters from the beginning of 2018.

About Delos™
As the pioneer of Wellness Real Estate™, Delos is transforming our homes, offices, schools, and other indoor environments by placing health and wellness at the center of design and construction decisions. Delos helps create spaces that actively contribute to human health, performance and well-being by marrying the best innovations in technology, health, science, and real estate. The Delos platform includes programming, design, consulting, research, and an array of innovative solutions and technologies designed to improve health and wellness. Addressing Barriers for Women Leaders: Mentoring

0
0

By: Jennifer Williamson

SOURCE:Sodexo, Inc.

DESCRIPTION:

In 1972 Katharine Graham became America’s first female Fortune 500 CEO, leading The Washington Post Company, the fifth largest publishing company at the time, and under her leadership profits grew 20 percent annually from 1975 to 1985.   She also became a role model and mentor for many women leaders in male-dominated fields and spoke openly about the issues they faced.

Last year the US hit a milestone with a record 27 female CEOs at the helm of S&P 500 companies. And while there has been progress since 1972, it has not been enough, especially when women are projected to account for 51 percent of the increase in total labor force growth between 2008 and 2018.

As it’s been said, “you can’t BE what you can’t SEE.”   In fact, a study from The Rockefeller Foundation found that women and Americans overall feel there is a critical need for female role models and mentors. Two-thirds of Americans said that it’s highly important to them that younger women starting their careers have more women in leadership positions as role models. This desire is especially intense among millennial women (82 percent of women younger than 35), compared with 74 percent among women 35-54 years old, and even lower (67 percent) among women 55 or older.

In the same study, most women cited having women as a mentor, suggesting the need for, and potential influence of, more women in top positions. Specifically, among women who had mentors in the workplace, nearly two-thirds said that their mentor was another woman, rising to 72% among millennial women who have had mentors, while just 37 percent had male mentors.

Companies that effectively implement mentoring programs, in particular women-to-women mentoring, know that there are benefits for all parties involved:

For mentees, benefits include:

  • Learning first-hand from someone that has already traveled the path
  • Having access to a broader organizational network
  • Having a “safe zone” to talk about challenges that are unique to women and obstacles to advancement

For mentors, benefits include:

  • Nurturing future women leaders for the organization
  • Gaining fresh perspectives, ideas and approaches
  • Developing personal leadership and coaching styles

For companies, benefits include:

  • Reinforcing that women have a place and path to success within the organization
  • Developing existing female talent at all levels
  • Improving staff morale, performance and motivation

As corporate America looks to develop even more female leaders, what are some of the benefits you have seeing come from mentoring? Share your comments on Sodexo Insights.

It’s a critical time for the arts and healthcare across the USA. In solidarity with Americans for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and dozens of arts organizations, the AATA was a proud National Partner for the 30th annual Arts Advocacy Day, March 20 and 21, 2017, in Washington, DC. Executive Director Cynthia Woodruff and I represented the AATA at the event’s National Arts Action Summit. Hosted by Americans for the Arts (AftA) in partnership with over 85 arts-related cultural and civic groups, we joined together with a record 700 enthusiastic participants – and we were noticed! The New York Times and the Washington Post reported on this most well-attended Arts Advocacy Day to date.

AATA has been represented at previous Arts Advocacy Days, and our support of this year’s event was all the more significant given the planned budget cuts impacting the National Endowments for the Arts (NEA) and the Humanities (NEH).During the months prior, AATA volunteers and staff were part of AftA’s Legislative Planning Team, tasked with preparing materials for this important annual event.

Take an Exclusive Look Behind-the-scenes of Fx’s ‘Legion’ and Learn How Fox Goes Green on Set

SOURCE:21st Century Fox

DESCRIPTION:

FX’s Legion drew praise from critics and audiences alike for its ambitious storytelling and visual style, and fans can now check out an exclusive video and case study detailing how the cast and crew brought that same level of ambition to going green behind-the-scenes. All departments made a concerted effort to save energy, reduce the show’s carbon footprint, and overall make the production as environmentally sustainable as possible, even piloting new technologies that could advance sustainability for the entire industry. The initiatives came as part of 21st Century Fox’s broad commitment to minimizing its environmental impacts, growing sustainably, and inspiring others to take action.

“This is the first production I’ve worked on where the conversation [about sustainability] started during our first production meeting,” said Kim Goddard-Rains, Production Coordinator. “I hope that it inspires people when they see the results and that they’re reminded of the little things we can all do. It feels good.”

Before shooting began, 21CF once again hired Zena Harris of Green Sparks Group, who previously oversaw green initiatives on The X-Files event series in 2016, as Legion’s sustainable production consultant. Harris worked directly with each department throughout the nearly six-month shoot to review best practices from the Green Production Guide, which Fox developed in collaboration with peer Hollywood studios, as well as identify opportunities to innovate new techniques for energy saving, such as partnering with Portable Electric to pilot their new mobile power stations.

“The studio was very supportive as we trialed battery power stations to replace the smaller generators that are diesel powered,” Harris said. “It reduces greenhouse gas emissions from generators and helps eliminate noise.”

These strategies, combined with every department’s goals to save energy and reduce waste, resulted in significant cost and energy savings across the board. The crew managed to divert 55% of the waste from landfill, avoid 252 metric tons of CO2 emissions, and collectively save nearly $47,500 USD, as well as purchase 70% Forest Stewardship Council-certified lauan plywood for set construction.

These achievements build on a long history of pioneering green production practices at 21CF. The company regularly works with production crews across its film and television projects to ensure environmental responsibility is integrated into each department’s daily operations, with previous series 24: Live Another Day and The X-Files event series each breaking new ground for the industry at large on lumber sourcing and recycling.

Milestone 250th and 251st American Coal Plants Announce Retirement

SOURCE:Bloomberg

DESCRIPTION:

Originally posted on sierraclub.org

Today marked the 250th U.S. coal plant that has retired or committed to retire since the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign began in 2010, driving coal use down to its lowest level in history. The retirement of Ohio’s Killen and Stuart plants by June 2018 comes after months of conversations between Dayton Power & Light and stakeholders. DPL and other co-owners decided to announce the retirement because the plants are not economically viable. These plants are the 250th and 251st plants retired nationwide, respectively, since the Beyond Coal Campaign began.

“Despite claims to the contrary, King Coal is not coming back” said Michael Bloomberg. “Four coal-fired power plants have been slated for retirement since November, reflecting strong demand for clean energy over polluting coal. The Americans who power the Beyond Coal campaign won a big victory today and will continue to fight to close half the U.S. coal plants, clean our air and meet our global climate commitments.”

Bloomberg’s foundation has provided $80 million to the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign.

From the Marine Corps to PayPal - Finding Purpose After Service

SOURCE:PayPal

DESCRIPTION:

PayPal manager Heather Holcomb, a former U.S. Marine, knows how challenging re-entering civilian life can be while searching for the next career path. After spending four years in the military, Heather, 29, hoped her experience would be a straight shot to a job in communications technology. Unfortunately, she struggled to gain traction. Without a degree in applied technology or engineering, her hands-on experience didn’t seem to resonate with employers. To bridge the gap, she joined BreakLine, an immersive educational program designed to help veterans transition from military jobs to fulfilling private sector careers in finance and technology.

Today, Heather is a Product Manager for Availability, Performance and Scalability at PayPal’s San Jose, California headquarters. Through her job, she has found a way to help other veterans who are facing the same challenges that she faced. By working directly with BreakLine and PayPal, she can help them find rewarding careers of their own.

Let’s talk about your work in the military. What was that like?
I served four years as a Marine Corps Communications Officer, leading large teams of Marines to build secure and reliable data infrastructures in austere environments. This means that I’d pack systems onto the backs of trucks, drive to desolate environments and build out multiple data centers to connect Marines in the air to the Marines on the ground. It was an incredible experience and it made me see how important it is to have reliable communications when it matters most - it can even save lives. I saw firsthand how technology was paving the way to the future and that ignited my passion for a career in technology.

It also set me up for success in my current role on PayPal’s APS team. Although PayPal’s systems and architecture are different from the deployment architectures we use in the Marine Corps, the same system qualities and concepts apply to the PayPal site.

How does the BreakLine program prepare veterans for careers in the tech industry?
Well, the program is a combination of classroom learning, networking events and exposure to some of the top business leaders in Silicon Valley. It’s four weeks long and each week is hosted by a different tech company – like Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Andreesen Horowitz, Salesforce and PayPal.  Because the companies host the program on their own campuses, the vets who attend are able to really see what it’s like to work at a major tech company in Silicon Valley, instead of this abstract feeling of being in a classroom somewhere. At the same time, the program offers structured business classes taught by faculty from top universities, as well as fireside chats with technology leaders from different companies.

Earlier this month, Serve - our veterans affinity group here at PayPal – hosted a lunch for BreakLine participants to share advice about how they were able to successfully pivot in their own careers, which is also a great opportunity for them to grow their own personal networks.

When you attended the program, what was it about PayPal that made you want to work there?
I really wanted to find a technology company where innovation was at the heart of the work they were doing. I was drawn to PayPal for the same reason I was drawn to military service: I was passionate about being a part of something bigger than myself. PayPal’s vision of democratizing financial services really resonated with me.

What does democratizing financial services mean to you?
It means providing financial services that the traditional banking industry is not set up to provide. I love that I can help contribute to this vision because I have known Marines who were the only members of their extended family with a bank account or access to a line of credit. I saw the stress that came with carrying the financial burden of their entire family by trying to extend their own access and opportunity to those they cared for most. The first time I heard PayPal’s vision of financial inclusion, I thought of the positive impact it would have on those military service members and their families.

When you’re not working, what do you do for fun?
Because my husband is still an active duty Marine stationed in Hawaii, PayPal allows me to work remotely for one week each month so I can visit him. We really appreciate that flexibility and support. While together, we enjoy spending time with other military families. We also love to hike, explore the beaches, and enjoy all of the amazing food that is native to the islands.

Booz Allen Women Share First-Hand Experiences with FIRST®

DESCRIPTION:

Whether its improving heart health or the automation of cars, Artificial Intelligence is changing the way we exist in today’s connected world. In our technology-driven world, it’s never been more important to build the pipeline of talent in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, and to encourage the next generation of innovators. Since 1989, FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) has been nurturing kids’ love of STEM, and inspiring them to take on engineering challenges.

Booz Allen Lead Associate Laura Hayman manages Booz Allen’s partnership with FIRST, and she helps employees passionate about helping kids and supporting STEM education get involved in FIRST as volunteers and in some cases, consultants. “I have the job I dreamed about when I was a teenager, working at the intersection of the corporate and social sectors. Every day, I help smart, interesting, and generous colleagues get involved in FIRST, so that FIRST and Booz Allen can together affect more kids and communities. I’m proof that you don’t have to be a scientist or an engineer now to be part of inspiring future ones.”

In honor of Women’s History Month in March, we talked with two more Booz Allen women involved in FIRST to find out what inspired them to get involved.

Lead Associate Amy Dalmas, an instructional designer at the firm, describes this as her “rookie year” as a FIRST mentor. It was Amy’s 8 year-old daughter Mia’s love of all things scientific that spurred Amy’s decision to become a FIRST LEGO® League Junior (FLL) mentor. Mia “can spend whole days building stuff” and she put her ingenuity to use this season with FLL Jr.’s “Creature Craze” challenge which resulted in a group of elementary school kids researching the horses of Assateague Island in MD and building a LEGO model of their habitat.

“I spent three years of my undergraduate program taking engineering classes, eventually graduating with a degree in mathematics and computer science. I enjoyed teaching the kids some fundamentals of engineering so that they could build a motorized lighthouse for their model,” Amy said. “Back when I was a freshman at Penn State Wilkes-Barre, I was one of just three women in my Engineering 101 class. By the end of the semester I was the only woman left. Throughout my time as an undergraduate, I was often one of the few women in my engineering, computer science, and math classes. While I always found my professors to be very encouraging, the absence of other women could be a deterrent for others. I want my daughter to know that there are plenty of opportunities for her in the STEM fields—and her experience with FIRST certainly helped encourage her interest.”

Meanwhile Senior Associate Tina Mangles has been volunteering with FIRST for 9 years, beginning when her son was in first grade and continuing through high school. Tina still serves as a mentor for the TitanBots First Robotics team 2543 in Chula Vista, CA, even though her son is now studying civil engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. “Many FIRST mentors start as parents who volunteer on their kids’ teams, and then stick around after their kids graduate. That’s how rewarding working with these kids can be,” Tina said.

“I help the kids learn presentation skills, project management, conflict resolution, and how to get buy-in from teammates for their ideas,” said Mangles. “The team recently wrote a successful grant application that secured them $5,000 to purchase a trailer with which to transport their designs. “The kids are the owners of their own processes. They run it past the adult mentors, but they are in charge,” she said.

FIRST participants—the kids and the adults—discover their new interests and skills through FIRST challenges, and become more confident and capable leaders. With support from colleagues like Laura, Tina, and Amy, Booz Allen women are helping thousands of kids envision their very own dream jobs.

When asked where she finds personal inspiration in FIRST, Laura refers to the sense of community. “FIRST offers all kids, and actually all adults, an opportunity to learn and contribute, to be valued for their strengths, and to be part of a team. I’m inspired by the kids who struggled socially or academically until they joined a FIRST team. I’m inspired by the community we have here at Booz Allen, where employees who do different types of work and live in different states, connect around FIRST and are part of something bigger.”

Confessions of a Data Cynic

by Jeffrey Whitford, Head of Global Corporate Responsibility for MilliporeSigma

SOURCE:MilliporeSigma

DESCRIPTION:

I didn’t want to believe; in fact, I’ve spent years fighting it. People go on and on about the power of data and I just didn’t see it.

I come from a world where skill in design and creativity can make almost anything work, and creating words isn’t frowned upon—or at least that’s what I told myself.  I figured that I could sell my Corporate Responsibility story with words and pictures and do just fine—until I had one of those painful “Aha” moments.

I remember—with a level of clarity that I wish I could have on about any other topic—exactly where I was and who I was with. One of our sales managers had invited me to do a Quarterly Business Review, or QBR, with one of our academic customers in California. This was a slam dunk—I could talk about our Corporate Responsibility program in my sleep. And that is just what I did.

It went well—lots of questions and talk about how we could collaborate and move the topic forward with that particular customer. Then one gentleman, who had been particularly quiet, spoke up. He said, “This is great and all, but how can you help us quantify this?”

Say what? Quantify? Do we really need to go there? Can’t we just do stuff and make an impact? Of course it’s more nuanced than that, but if we want to boil it down, that’s what I was thinking at the time.

That moment, though, was the transformational moment for our work at MilliporeSigma—not only for our overall Corporate Responsibility program, but more specifically, for our industry leading Green Chemistry program.

New brand reflects the company’s purpose of guiding today’s ideas into tomorrow’s technology

SOURCE:Avnet, Inc.

DESCRIPTION:

PHOENIX, April 4, 2017 /3BL Media/ --  Highlighting its ongoing mission to help customers navigate an ever-changing technology landscape, Avnet (NYSE: AVT) today introduced “Reach Further,” its new global branding campaign. Reach Further reflects Avnet’s corporate transformation as well as the collaborative relationship with the company’s customers in navigating the complex process of bringing new technology to the marketplace. The campaign launches today with a cohesive marketing, digital and media strategy to introduce a new brand and visual identity which underscores Avnet’s approach and commitment to helping customers reach further every day.

Today, hundreds of thousands of design engineers from start-ups to leading technology OEMs utilize the company’s design and supply chain services and rely on its large volume, broad line distribution capabilities. In two simple words, Reach Furtherexpresses how Avnet helps the smallest start-ups to the largest technology multinational corporations move swiftly and seamlessly from idea to design and from prototype to production.

“Reach Further is our promise that Avnet and each of our employees will do whatever it takes to guide customers and partners toward their most ambitious goals,” said Avnet Chief Marketing Officer Kevin Sellers. “A brand is more than a marketing campaign, it is an authentic expression of the character and values of the company. The Reach Further mantra reflects a solemn commitment Avnet is making to makers, inventors, entrepreneurs, design engineers and suppliers.”

Sellers added, “In our increasingly connected IoT world, and one where tools and capabilities for invention are becoming more readily accessible, this campaign presents us with an opportunity to distinguish how we uniquely help our customers navigate each stage of the product lifecycle. Avnet helps companies around the world realize technology’s potential to transform business, and our new brand symbolizes our promise to help them reach further in pursuit of their highest aspirations.”

A new look for a new company

Reach Further is the result of deep research on Avnet’s key stakeholder audiences and aligns with the company’s business strategy. Avnet’s new logo replaces red with green to symbolize growth and possibility. The global campaign reflects the largest investment that Avnet has made in a marketing campaign during its 96-year history. It includes a focused mix of B2B print and digital advertising, paid and organic social media, digital display and video, and search engine marketing, as well as a new website and engagement program for Avnet’s 15,000 employees around the world. Supporting activities include trade shows and events and corporate social responsibility programs to extend and build awareness.

The company’s newly launched website has been designed to provide quick access to information through improved navigation and increased access to an expansive list of products and services. Users will have a consistent and simple experience across the site, whether they are researching new technology solutions or actively shopping for electronic components.

In addition, Avnet is introducing its “A-Frame,” a new graphic element to build brand recognition that represents the company’s dedication to progress and collaboration and is used to highlight or frame important moments.

Reach Further embodies the role of the traditional “Sherpa” for Himalayan expeditions who provides the experience and guidance to manage challenging expeditions. The campaign highlights real-world stories of how Avnet has guided entrepreneurs, inventors and makers as they bring their solutions to market, including:

Owlet. Owlet developed a baby sock that tracks heart rate and oxygen levels in infants, designed to notify parents if levels fall outside preset zones. Avnet helped guide their product to market.
(See Owlet video story)

Ubicquia. Avnet works with Ubicquia to make cities smarter by embedding streetlight sensors that detect threats such as gas leaks, radiation and gunshots, and alert response teams. These same sensors alert rural African communities to the approach of dangerous animals.
(See Ubicquia video story)

“In creating an IoT device that can make a huge impact in cities around the world, Avnet’s scale and scope was invaluable,” said Ubicquia Co-Founder and CTO Tre Zimmerman. “Avnet helped us determine how to not just bring the product to life, but make it better.”

The rebranding culminates several strategic business moves, including the recent acquisitions of Premier Farnell and Hackster.io that Avnet has made to reach further into the conception, design and prototyping processes. These are stages where innovators can benefit most from an exposure to the hardware that will help them bring their products to market. In addition, the launch of Avnet’s MakerSource.io™  online resource directory provides individuals and startups with access to a comprehensive ecosystem of the strategic and tactical resources needed to turn a pioneering new product vision into a marketable reality, while the Avnet Innovation Lab at Arizona State University provides business consultation and funding for entrepreneurs developing technology, especially new inventions that advance the Internet of Things (IoT).

Working across sectors and organizations, the East St. Louis community has come together to help young people feel safe and secure in their community, be ready to succeed in school and work and empower them to create change.

SOURCE:GSK

DESCRIPTION:

“The State of the Movement is strong,” declared Montez Holton, a junior at East St. Louis Senior High School, referring to the East Side Aligned collective impact “movement” in East St. Louis, IL.  Working across sectors and organizations, the East St. Louis community has come together to help young people feel safe and secure in their community, be ready to succeed in school and work and empower them to create change.

One way Montez is making a difference is as member of the Youth Coordinating Council that works to dismantle health barriers for young people across East St. Louis and is supported by the GSK IMPACT Grant for Greater St. Louis.  With GSK’s support, out-of-school time providers in the East Side Aligned network are supporting hundreds of students after-school and throughout the summer to increase healthy behaviors, improve school performance, and develop leadership skills.  Additionally, this grant supports efforts to develop out-of-school time provider staff and engage young people like Montez to create their own solutions for making East St. Louis a healthier place to live and grow – like their recent creation of a yoga and meditation room painted in calming colors at Lessie Bates Neighborhood House.

In total and including GSK’s $500,000 IMPACT Grant, East Side Aligned has already raised $2.5 million to support workforce readiness, youth programming and community safety improvements in line with the movement’s roadmap and collective priorities.  During Friday’s State of the Movement event, leaders from across the East St. Louis community celebrated this truly collaborative effort to improve outcomes for young people.  There is still much to do, but with East Side Aligned residents of East St. Louis are moving forward to make their community even better.

GSK is so proud to be a small part of this community-led effort to tackle complex issues and advance equity for young people in East St. Louis.
