Amgen Scholars Program: Jonathan Stoltzfus, PhD

SOURCE:Amgen Foundation

DESCRIPTION:

Jonathan Stoltzfus

Host Institution: University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), 2007

Undergraduate Institution: Messiah College

Hometown: Harrisonburg, Virginia

Graduate Institution: Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania

Graduate Degree and Research Area: PhD, cell and molecular biology, 2013

Jonathan Stoltzfus’s summer as a UCSF Amgen Scholar in 2007 confirmed his desire to become a scientist and catalyzed his career. As an early-career scientist in academia, he is now bringing to aspiring scientists the research opportunity he had as an undergraduate.

In 2006, as a rising junior in college, Stoltzfus got his first taste of independent scientific research when he journeyed to a rural part of Zambia, a landlocked country in southern Africa. His experiments at the Malaria Institute at Macha focused on how malaria—caused by a parasite that ravages red blood cells—affected children; and shadowing his adviser during rounds in the community hospital gave Stoltzfus a firsthand look. “Seeing children in comas and suffering from cerebral malaria drove home the purpose of my own experiments in the lab,” he recalls.

In Zambia, Stoltzfus’s day-to-day experiences doing research were frustrating. Electrical outages would thwart his experiments, and the scientists had to wait endlessly for supplies they needed.

By the end of the summer, Stoltzfus knew he liked research but wanted to try it in a well-equipped lab. The opportunities for cutting-edge hands-on research back home at Messiah College in Pennsylvania were few. That’s why Stoltzfus was thrilled to be accepted into the Amgen Scholars Program.

In the UCSF lab of Creg Darby, Stoltzfus studied the bacterium that causes the plague, Yersinia pestis, using the tiny worm Caenorhabditis elegans, a creature common to scientific laboratories. Working with then graduate student Kevin Drace, Stoltzfus was allowed to pursue his project with intellectual freedom, plenty of resources, and top-notch mentorship. “Kevin encouraged me to ask the why and how questions about my project and to begin to learn how to answer my own questions and design my own experiments,” he says.

Stoltzfus went on to conduct postbaccalaureate research at the National Institutes of Health and earned a PhD at the University of Pennsylvania in four years. Since 2013, Stoltzfus has taught biology at Hollins University, a small liberal arts institution. Working with worms, Stoltzfus develops original research questions and encourages undergraduate students to tackle them to find answers as part of their laboratory courses or in dedicated research time.

Mentoring those undergraduates is an important focus for him. The style of mentorship that Stoltzfus received as an Amgen Scholar influenced how he in turn mentors students like Adeiye Pilgrim, a recent Hollins graduate. “I got excited by being able to do things on my own in the lab and make mistakes,” Adeiye says, adding that Stoltzfus’s mentorship and the environment he created in his lab solidified Adeiye’s desire to pursue research as a career, she adds.

“I really enjoy mentoring young scientists to think critically and carefully about scientific problems,” Stoltzfus says. “Watching them blossom as they gain confidence in their technical skills and understanding of the field is amazing and one of the best parts of my job.”

Editor's note: since reporting for this story, Jonathan has started a postdoctoral research position in the Department of Biology at the University of Pennsylvania.

SOURCE:America's Charities

DESCRIPTION:

By Jim Starr

The world of philanthropy is changing – in the workplace and at home.  Donors want more charitable choice.  They want their hard-earned dollars invested in effective, reputable charities that are tackling major issues of critical importance.  They want to amplify the impact of their charitable donations.  And more and more people want to support a cause, not just an institution.  We’ve paid attention and are happy to announce that we just launched new Cause Funds that allow a donor to do all those things and more. Our new Cause Funds are the latest in America’s Charities offerings to donors who want to make a significant difference both inside and outside of the workplace.

The four new Cause Funds are:

Our new Cause Funds were designed for you—the people who want to support effective, reputable charities that are tackling major issues of critical importance, including cancer research and advocacy, hunger relief, children health and advocacy, and animal rights and research.  Each donation to a Cause Fund is divided evenly among the nonprofits that comprise the Fund, so donors can amplify their impact by supporting an entire cause with a single contribution. America’s Charities Cause Funds also provide participating nonprofits with an additional platform to gain visibility and increase their fundraising potential.

And not a moment too soon! Our new Cause Funds are just in time for the charitable giving season. According to Network for Good, in 2014 nearly 30 percent of digital giving occurred during the month of December, with 12 percent in the last three days of the year. America’s Charities new Cause Funds support donors with their impact investments, particularly Millennials, who are more inclined to support a particular cause as opposed to an individual organization, according to the 2014 Millennial Impact Report.

So what are you waiting for? Check out our new Cause Funds, https://www.charities.org/funds, to contribute to real and meaningful work that improves our world. You can give with confidence because you know their hard-earned dollars are supporting America’s Charities members, each high-performing, diverse in its program and service offerings and thoroughly vetted.

Now it’s your turn: What other charitable choice would you like to see from America’s Charities? Leave a comment here on our post!

DESCRIPTION:

More than half of the world's population lives within 100 km of the coast. While human beings have always depended on the ocean for food, advancements in fishing technology and unsustainable fishing practices are now taking their toll. Fish stocks in continental shelf areas are considered to be fully or over exploited. Fishing techniques such as trawling and dredging are causing serious damage to marine habitats and organisms living on the sea floor.

Hotels and restaurants serving seafood can play an important role to counter this situation by choosing seafood that has been farmed or harvested sustainably.

CITGO and The Conservation Foundation Lead Volunteers in Protecting the Heritage Quarries Recreation Area

DESCRIPTION:

LEMONT, Ill., Dec. 29, 2015 /3BL Media/ – Nearly 300 volunteers led by the CITGO Lemont Refinery and The Conservation Foundation came together this fall to remove invasive plants attacking wildlife within the Heritage Quarries Recreation Area (HQRA). Located just half a mile east of downtown Lemont, the HQRA is situated among thousands of acres of forest preserves, including more than 65 miles of hiking and biking trails, as well as access to fishing and boating along the I & M Canal and the Consumers, Great Lakes and Icebox Quarries. The ecological restoration of the HQRA will not only allow Illinois residents to continue enjoying the recreational grounds, but it will also enable Lemont teachers and students to explore the quarries through class projects interacting with plant and animal species and conducting water quality testing.

This environmental restoration effort is a part of the CITGO Caring for Our Coast initiative, a series of projects designed to boost ecological conservation, restoration and education. CITGO has been funding semiannual projects within the HQRA since the fall of 2014, when approximately 200 volunteers cleaned three acres of land and harvested native species’ seeds for replanting the following spring. In April 2016, CITGO volunteers will return to the HQRA to continue replanting seeds native to the area.

“CITGO has been long committed to protecting the environment for the benefit of generations to come,” said Jim Cristman, vice president and general manager of the CITGO Lemont Refinery. “In the past year alone, the Lemont Refinery has taken part in local restoration and revitalization efforts with the Wildlife Habitat Council and the Alliance for the Great Lakes, and our environmental efforts continue with our partnership with The Conservation Foundation.”

“The large volunteer showing is a testament to how the environment can benefit from collaborative efforts,” said Dan Lobbes, director of land protection at The Conservation Foundation. “Since our founding in 1972, The Conservation Foundation, with help from volunteers, has preserved more than 33,000 acres of open space and natural land. We’re glad to partner with CITGO to restore the Heritage Quarries Recreation Area and make it even more educational and family-friendly.”

The CITGO Lemont Refinery works with many charitable organizations in the upper Midwest, assisting in environmental, education, social and health initiatives throughout the region. In addition to its work at HQRA, Team CITGO, the Lemont Refinery’s employee volunteer group, works with a variety of altruistic nonprofits such as the Wildlife Habitat Council, the Alliance for the Great Lakes, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the United Way and the Multiple Sclerosis Society, as well as local organizations such as the MorningStar Mission in Joliet and the Bethany Food Pantry in Lemont. In 2014, Team CITGO hosted 76 volunteer events involving more than 700 employees giving more than 2,000 hours of their time.

About The Conservation Foundation
The Conservation Foundation is one of the region’s largest and oldest private conservation organizations, with more than 4,000 members and donors, and more than 500 volunteers who contribute 20,000 hours per year.

Work is focused in DuPage, Kane, Kendall and Will Counties to preserve and restore nature in your neighborhood. Find out more at theconservationfoundation.org.

About the CITGO Lemont Refinery
The CITGO Lemont Refinery employs more than 800 local residents on a full-time and contract basis in support of the local economy. In addition to producing high quality fuels for a large portion of the network of nearly 6,000 locally-owned CITGO stations across the country, Lemont refinery employees also make a major positive impact on the community. Each year, more than 2,500 volunteer hours and thousands of dollars are given in support of community programs such as Muscular Dystrophy Association, United Way and a variety of environmental and preservation programs. Climate Talks Are Over, Now What?

Never before has there been so much alignment on action that needs to be taken to mitigate the risks of climate change. But never before has there been so much work still to do.

SOURCE:Green Builder Media

DESCRIPTION:

No doubt, the agreement reached in Paris to limit global warming, reduce carbon emissions, adopt clean technologies, and assist poor countries that have been impacted by climate change is historic. Never before has there been so much alignment on action that needs to be taken to mitigate the risks of climate change. Never before have we had such a framework for cooperation. However, the agreement isn’t the endpoint, it’s just the beginning, and now the hard work begins.

The Paris agreement simply opens a door for change, and now we must walk boldly through it. As Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, German environmental scientist and climate advisor to Pope Francis, said, “This is a turning point in the human enterprise, where the great transformation towards sustainability begins.”

Ultimately, the success of global climate action efforts won’t be measured by the signing of this agreement. Rather, it will be assessed by the ability and willingness to execute on the stated commitments of over 190 countries and countless multi-national businesses.

In the U.S., the agreement will undoubtedly encounter roadblocks. Congress’ attack effort to dismantle the agreement began even before the COP21 delegates returned stateside. “The president is making promises he can’t keep, writing checks he can’t cash, and stepping over the middle class to take credit for an ‘agreement’ that is subject to being shredded in 13 months,” said Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Leader.

But, because the agreement is not considered a treaty under U.S. law, there is little that Congress can do to impede it. While Congress would need to approve funding to assist developing countries adapt to climate change—an important aspect of the American commitment, the 31-page document explicitly excludes emissions reduction targets and finance from legally binging aspects (such as public reporting and five-year review cycles that ratchet up the stringency of climate change policies), thereby protecting the U.S. from liability and compensation claims for causing climate damage.

Meet One of the Wizards Bringing Hogwarts to Hollywood

SOURCE:Comcast Corporation

DESCRIPTION:

With the Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ scheduled to open at Universal Studios Hollywood on April 7, 2016, meet one of the members of NBCUniversal’s Creative Team bringing Hogwarts to life and learn how robotics sparked her interest in technology at an early age.

As a sixth-grader, Erica McCay didn’t look to join the debate club or the track team. Instead, she became a “Moosette” – a member of her school’s all-girls electric go-kart racing team. It was “a loose introduction to engineering,” Erica says. “We learned how to wire a battery and operate machine tools, such as a drill press.”

Erica McCay learned the basics of engineering behind the wheel of an electric go-kart.

That experience hooked her on technology. Today Erica, who is 27, works with NBCUniversal’s Creative Team, currently managing the design and installation of animated props and special effects at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ at Universal Studios Hollywood theme park in California.

And she’s deeply committed to inspiring young people to follow in her footsteps as one of 100 Comcast NBCUniversal employees volunteering this school year to collectively mentor hundreds of students through our company’s support of FIRST.

Erica and the other employee mentors work with high school students nationwide as they organized teams to design and build robots that participated in an annual FIRST® Robotics Competition. A New Hampshire-based nonprofit, FIRST aims to inspire children of all ages to be science and technology leaders, and Comcast NBCUniversal has supported FIRST since 2008 with team sponsorships and employee mentors.

Giving back in this way is personal for Erica since she was once a part of her high school’s robotics team.

Erica recalled that at Gunn High School in Palo Alto, Calif., the team’s mentor imparted more than words of wisdom – he lit a spark. "He instilled a problem-solving mindset, always helping us get unstuck by seeking different viewpoints and trying different solutions. (He) made me realize that I can do what I love and get paid for it – it didn’t have to be a hobby."

When Erica moved on to study mechanical engineering at the Oregon Institute of Technology, she took her four years of Gunn Robotics experience and continued to pay it forward by mentoring younger students participating in the FIRST LEGO League. She also pitched in to help guide a FIRST Robotics team at a high school in the Bay Area, and additionally accompanied one of her former mentors to Singapore to start a robotics competition there.

"Robotics is so much more than engineering," she says. "You get to learn about business, network with other teams, and really build a community."

After graduating and spending the first two-and-a-half years of her career designing sets for theatrical productions, Erica sought out a job that would enable her to create more hands-on experiences for the audience. The theme park industry was a good match, and it turned out her FIRST involvement gave her a leg up on the competition during the hiring process. "They knew I had direct experience designing and building – and could work with intense time pressures to create a finished product as part of a team."

Now two years into her job with NBCUniversal, she can’t imagine working in any other field. "I get to help people become a part of the stories they love. When you watch people go through Hogwarts in Orlando, and strangers finding common ground no matter where they’re from ... it’s awesome."

Erica also got to show off her design skills in another way. In 2014, she helped design the trophy for the Media & Technology Innovation Award, which is sponsored by Comcast NBCUniversal and handed out during the FIRST Robotics Championship in St. Louis, Mo.

Says Erica of her budding career as a theme park designer: "I am in the perfect place. This is the industry I never knew I wanted to be in."

It IS Easy To Be Green: A Look Back At 2015

By Dr. Ilham Kadri, Diversey Care President

SOURCE:Sealed Air

DESCRIPTION:

For me, the end of every year always seems to be a phenomenally busy, even chaotic, time – a period when juggling the completion of work projects with attending a host of personal engagements seems like a fine art.

However, during this time, I think it is important to find a quiet moment in the midst of the storm to pause and take stock of the trends, events and changes that shaped the past year. And, for 2015, this is no small task – both for the cleaning and hygiene industry and for all of us here at Sealed Air and Diversey Care.

It is easy being green

Not by coincidence, 2015 has been a year of renewed sustainability commitments and the advent of the Circular Economy (read a great blog about it here: http://sealedair.com/blog/bubble-wrap-today-circular-economy-model-sealed-air). For those of us in the Hygiene industry, green cleaning is not exactly a recent phenomenon. However, this year there has been a resurgence of interest in eco-friendly cleaning. This is perhaps in large part due to recent scientific breakthroughs which have seen the development of products which combine environmentally friendly-credentials with performance and efficiency. New, professional-grade products such as Diversey Care’s SURE™ range not only ensure that we as an industry are helping safeguard people from the effects of harsh chemicals, but also that we are protecting the environment for the sake of future generations – all without compromising performance.

Robotics: the future is here

This increased focus on green cleaning brings me to another key trend which shaped the industry in 2015 – namely, robotics. Advances in technology have created a host of new avenues to achieve more sustainable cleaning, and the emergence of increasingly advanced robotics as truly product-efficient, water-saving and waste-reducing solutions has been a hugely significant example of this.

The acquisition of Intellibot Robotics earlier this year by Diversey Care underscored our belief in an increasingly ‘robotic’ future, particularly in the field of floor cleaning. These machines now sit at the core of Diversey Care’s ‘The Internet of Clean’ program – a concept that applies tech innovations such as connectivity, big data, remote control, distance monitoring, augmented reality, and of course robotics, to our overall offering. Reaffirming commitments to gender diversity

2015 was a year in which a number of initiatives were launched throughout our industry which showcased and confirmed a real commitment drive forward the gender diversity agenda.

It has been proven time and time again that a more gender diverse workplace – one which inspires men and women alike to reach their full potential – is far better positioned to benefit all involved both creatively and financially. I have also long believed that the treatment of women is a very accurate barometer of progress. Therefore, as a forward-looking, modern and ambitious industry, we have a real responsibility to ensure that gender diversity is actively championed.

It has been so encouraging to see programs which aim to promote more inclusive workplaces, and celebrate the men and women who are pursuing this, take centre stage this year – from ISSA’s Hygiea Network, which is committed to developing female cleaning industry professionals at all levels and experience, to Sealed Air’s own WIN (Women’s Initiative Network), which aims to ensure that Sealed Air attracts, retains and advances the professional development of women.

To me, these initiatives prove – not for the first time– that our industry takes its moral obligations seriously, and is at the forefront of driving positive change in the world.

It has been a remarkable year for our industry and I am very proud of having played my part personally in its progress.

With a 2015 full of technological advances and progressive moves to improve working cultures, I am excited to see what new developments 2016 holds for our industry – and looking forward to seeing what role Sealed Air and Diversey Care plays in them.

I welcome the challenges and opportunities we have before us in 2016.  Join us as we continue on

DESCRIPTION:

DENVER, Colo., December 29, 2015 /3BL Media/ - In January 2015, Arrow Electronics’ Value Recovery business added its North American processing facilities to the company’s existing Asset Disposal and Information Security Alliance (ADISA) certification programme. Since then, ADISA has carried out eight audits at Arrow Value Recovery sites in EMEA and the USA, and all have passed without exception.

Founder of ADISA, Steve Mellings picks up the story, “Arrow has been very clear that its service offering is truly international, and the company’s approach to ADISA certification certainly shows the confidence of that approach. As part of their certification programme, we treat all their sites as a single entity—so if one site fails, the whole company fails meaning the pressure on the individual teams at Arrow is high.”

The ADISA Audit programme includes scheduled full audits and, more importantly, a series of completely unannounced audits that includes random forensic analysis of up to 10 different devices on each visit.

Scott Venhaus, Global Director of Compliance at Arrow adds, “Having ADISA certification as part of Arrow’s Value Recovery global compliance program demonstrates that we are serious about protecting data. Our global compliance program incorporates best practices of today’s leading industry standards, including ADISA, while creating a flexible platform that allows Arrow to keep pace with global change.”
