Founded in 1877, the University of Tokyo (UTokyo) is the oldest national university in Japan. As Japan’s top and one of Asia’s most comprehensive research universities, UTokyo is committed to excellence in research and education as well as establishing a truly global campus with the aim of producing the next generation of leaders of the world.

The prime objective of the Amgen Scholars Program at UTokyo is to provide undergraduates who are committed to or who are considering a career in biology or related sciences, from different countries (including some from Japan), with biomedical research experience in the basic and translational sciences. Research projects which will provide these opportunities are submitted by faculty members belonging to the Graduate School of Science, Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences and Institute of Industrial Science. By the end of their summer experience, students are expected to acquire knowledge and skills of conducting research, and are also expected to have been able to extend their international friendship through the collaborative experiences. We are sure that these experiences will help the students to develop future collaborations in many situations.

The three main campuses of UTokyo are located in and around the center of metropolitan Tokyo. The Amgen Scholars will be able to experience both the traditional and innovative atmosphere of one of the most active cities of the world but still be able to find peace and tranquility within the campuses away from the noise and bustle of the city.

SOURCE:Quest Diagnostics

DESCRIPTION:

January 22, 2016 /3BL Media/ - As one of the top-scoring companies in our industry, Quest Diagnostics has qualified for inclusion in the 2016 edition of RobecoSAM’ s “The Sustainability Yearbook.” In the “Health Care Providers & Services” category, we received the Bronze Class distinction for our excellent sustainability performance. This is the third consecutive year that we’ve received the Bronze Class distinction. See our ranking here (Internet access required).

RobecoSAM is the same company that determines the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (see our most recent recognition). Quest received the Bronze Class distinction because our score was within a range of 5% to 10% from the industry leader’s score (Humana Inc. led the way in 2016).

Every year since 2004, The Sustainability Yearbook has listed the world’s most sustainable companies in each industry as determined by their score in RobecoSAM’ s annual Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA).

The CSA consists of an annual analysis of the sustainability performance of more than 2,000 companies covering the major indices. Following on from the first CSA conducted in 1999, RobecoSAM has built one of the largest proprietary databases for corporate sustainability.

CSA features systematic methodology
The annual assessment is based on an online questionnaire supported by company documentation. Analyses of company-specific information are complemented by an additional examination of media coverage, stakeholder commentaries and other publicly available sources.

The CSA questionnaire features about 100 questions on economic, environmental and social issues with a focus on industry-specific criteria that have a material impact on companies’ ability to generate long-term value. The CSA is regularly updated and adapted to capture new sustainability trends that are at the forefront of each industry sector and that are likely to have an impact on companies’ competitive landscape.

Honor Comes as the Civic Accelerator Seeks its Next Class of Social Innovators

SOURCE:Points of Light

DESCRIPTION:

ATLANTA, Jan. 22, 2016 /3BL Media/ – Ayesha Khanna, who created the Points of Light Civic Accelerator to support startups with social missions and citizen action, was recently named to Foreign Policy magazine’s Leading Global Thinkers of 2015, which includes heads of state, top minds in medicine and science, world-renowned artists and entrepreneurs at the forefront.

The magazine says of Khanna and the other honorees: “Just as the globe’s intractable problems aren’t confined neatly to the realms of politics and policy, neither are the individuals imagining innovative solutions.”

This spring, Khanna and her team are leading the seventh class of the Civic Accelerator, the country’s first accelerator program and investment fund supporting early-stage ventures addressing critical social problems. This session will focus on creating greater access to financial and digital tools, technologies and services. The application period opened this week.

Foreign Policy magazine pointed to Khanna’s work guiding last spring’s class, which accelerated ventures that create greater opportunity for women and girls. Khanna shares the honor with Shannon Schuyler, head of corporate responsibility at PwC and president of the PwC Charitable Foundation, a founding supporter of the Civic Accelerator along with the Starbucks Foundation.

“This honor showcases the contributions of women entrepreneurs and, more broadly, the innovative ideas and sustainable solutions that come from diverse individuals who are working in their communities to solve these complex social issues around the world and need help to tap into capital and resources to scale their impact,” Khanna said. “I am thrilled to share this honor with a true leader from one of our corporate partners that is forging the way to lend their talent and resources to help these entrepreneurs and their civic ventures succeed.”

Schuyler said of Khanna, “I am consistently inspired by the work Ayesha spearheads with the Points of Light Civic Accelerator to provide female entrepreneurs with the education, tools, mentoring and investments they need to start ventures that drive sustainable social change. Last year I was honored to stand side by side with Ayesha in Chicago with a dozen emerging entrepreneurs looking to address some of the world’s most significant challenges in dynamic new ways. The PwC Charitable Foundation is proud to play a role, with Ayesha and Points of Light, in the elevation, education and enlightenment of so many disruptive, empowered and truly special change agents.”

Khanna, who joined Points of Light in 2010, has worked across sectors and led nonprofit, for-profit and political organizations. She incubated and is a director of Fuse Corps, which matches experienced fellows with mayors to drive innovation. She also led and transformed several leading nonprofits, including the YWCA and United Way, and worked with leading Fortune 100 companies while with Andersen Consulting Strategy (now Accenture) after teaching and building health care centers in central India.

###

About the Points of Light Civic Accelerator

The Points of Light Civic Accelerator is the first accelerator program and investment fund in the country focused on "civic ventures"– for-profit and nonprofit startups that include people as part of the solution to critical social problems. The three month, boot camp-style program convenes 10-15 teams in person and online with the goal of equipping each startup to seek investments and scale their social innovation. The Civic Accelerator was launched in 2012, in partnership with Village Capital, and receives generous support from PwC Charitable Foundation and Starbucks Foundation, both founding partners, and from Capital One, Dentons US LLP, Singing for Change and official hotel sponsor, Hilton Worldwide. P&O Cruises and Cunard Winning the War on Waste

0
0

SOURCE:Carnival Corporation & plc

DESCRIPTION:

January 22, 2016 /3BL Media/ - The two Carnival UK brands of P&O Cruises and Cunard report major progress in reducing both fuel consumption and emissions during its cruise operations.

The latest annual Sustainability Report reveals that - during 2014 - fuel consumption was down by 5%.

An array of energy-saving measures on board ships in the fleets of both P&O Cruises and Cunard Line allied to a reduction in sea miles travelled effected this positive result which means that consumption was 18% below the 2011 total.

This reduction was also a factor in cutting CO2 emissions by nearly 5%, helping to ensure that parent company Carnival Corporation & plc was able to reach its target of reducing its greenhouse gases by 20% since 2005 by 2014 – a year ahead of schedule.   The next target is 25% by 2020.

And it was not just fuel and emissions that were reduced as the level of food waste produced was also cut back for the second year in succession so the level was less than 75% of the 2012 total.

Carnival UK was equally active in maintaining its support of the environment through alliances with UK wildlife trusts and by introducing an increasing number of “green” shore excursions.

Passengers can also now check the carbon footprint of the transportation element of tours from French ports before booking them.

Carnival UK also has strong links with charities including The Prince’s Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support. A variety of events and initiatives raised nearly £300,000 for Macmillan in 2014.

Cruising remains a significant contributor to the UK economy, with direct spending totalling €3.2bn and 71,000 jobs generated which pay a further €2.6bn in wages.

U.S. Manufacturers Find the Right Shore in Mexico

0
0

Mexico’s rise makes a compelling case for the right-shoring strategy for U.S. manufacturers.

SOURCE:UPS

DESCRIPTION:

Derrick Johnson | UPS

Check out this podcast on U.S. manufacturers moving to Mexico and recent trade reforms:

More and more these days, sophisticated U.S. imports – often from the aerospace, automotive and high-tech industries – share a common designation: Made in Mexico.

This trend reflects growing confidence among U.S. manufacturers that Mexico offers far more than affordable labor just across the southern border.

The country has modern, industry-specific manufacturing hubs staffed by skilled workers. U.S. companies and their customers can gain these benefits without having to wait for goods shipped across thousands of miles of ocean or paying for higher-priced air shipping.

Mexico has long been an important location for production and end delivery of goods, especially for companies that want to put manufacturing closer to U.S. demand.

But the country’s participation in many free trade agreements and its recent emergence as a world-class manufacturing center present an excellent opportunity for U.S. companies to balance other factors like costs or local resources to determine the proximity of sourced materials to production, warehousing and distribution.

In this case, U.S. companies establish manufacturing operations in Mexico to boost the benefits derived from just-in-time production practices while also taking advantage of Mexican skills and infrastructure.

Worth a second look

Over the last few decades, Mexico has established itself as a country where companies can build supply chains nimble enough to meet the demands of 21stcentury manufacturing.

Manufacturers need speed, efficiency and the ability to ramp up and contract production depending on the demands of the day. They also face more pressure than ever before to reduce transit times. This often requires shorter supply chains.

For U.S. companies that sell goods domestically, nearby Mexico is a logical choice to locate crucial supply chain links. That’s why we’re witnessing dramatic growth in a number of industries in regions throughout Mexico.

Take the aerospace industry, for example. Mexico has several aerospace manufacturing hubs that are known for industry expertise. Of Mexico’s 31 states, 16 have factories that specialize in aerospace, according to the Offshore Group. Between 2008 and 2013, as many as 36 aerospace factories were established in Chihuahua City.

The state of Chihuahua has universities and technical schools that graduate thousands of engineers and technicians each year. These graduates enter the workforce ready to support the local manufacturing industries, including aerospace.

U.S. automakers Ford, General Motors and Chrysler also are concentrating some manufacturing operations in Mexican cities, including Ramos Arizpe, Toluca, Hermosillo and Chihuahua.

The companies gain the benefits of relatively low business costs, skilled workforces and free trade agreements, which enable easier exporting to foreign markets.

Meanwhile, the city of Guadalajara has become known as a Latin Silicon Valley. More than 600 high-tech companies have facilities there, and the city is now the top producer of software, electronics and digital components in Mexico.

Manufacturing hubs like these compete directly with rival hubs in China, which, for a long time, has been the offshore manufacturing destination of choice for companies around the world.

But, as Chinese labor and transportation costs rise, U.S. companies see more value in locating manufacturing operations in Mexico where they can more easily supply U.S. markets.

Mexico’s improving transportation infrastructure is another important factor that companies consider when they decide to put operations in the country.

They also take a close look at intellectual property protection, which is stronger in Mexico than in other parts of the world. This is especially important for industries like aerospace and high-tech, which develop cutting-edge products.

Finally, concerns about setting up operations in Mexico are gradually dissipating as governments work to secure supply chains and improve personal safety for the people who live and work there.

The Mexico of tomorrow

Mexico’s economy is one of the most trade-integrated in the developing world, and trade between North American nations is on the rise. U.S. goods traded with Mexico in 2013 amounted to $506.6 billion, a gain of 2.8 percent from 2012, according to the U.S. Mission to Mexico.

In the 20 years since the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement, exports from the United States to Mexico have increased by 336 percent while Mexico’s exports to the United States have increased by 465 percent.

That’s why UPS is so bullish on Mexico and has devoted so many resources to the region of late.

For example, UPS CrossBorder Connect service bundles the necessary transportation components north and south of the U.S.-Mexico border with the company’s leading brokerage capabilities. This provides seamless integration and supply chain efficiencies and helps companies balance the need for speed with cost concerns.

UPS launched the service in 2012 in direct response to the resurgence of Mexico as a manufacturing base.

We see immense opportunity in the U.S.-Mexico trade lane in the years ahead. When it comes to fostering economic growth, Mexico is a modern-day success story.

But the best part of the story is yet to be told. In 20 years, Mexico could be one of the primary incubators for innovation in the world. In large part, I see that happening through expanded business ties with the United States.

You may not know that Mexico is already the leading trade partner for 32 U.S. states. But reading the tea leaves, even better times are on the horizon – for both countries.

Reaping the Rewards of Supporting Dairy Farmers More by Tetra Pak

SOURCE:Ethical Performance

DESCRIPTION:

There’s a Polish proverb that goes: “If the farmer is poor, then so is the whole country”. It’s a problem that Tetra Pak is highly aware of – it recognizes the link and knows that for it to succeed and grow, it needs the markets in which it operates, to do the same.

Indeed, the food packaging company has always had a tradition of supporting sustainable development, says Ulla Holm, director of Tetra Laval Food for Development unit . With Food for Development’s Dairy Hub concept, operated through both Tetra Pak and its sister company DeLaval, this support is taken to a whole new level.

The idea stems from Tetra Pak’s role in pioneering national school milk programmes, setting up the very first school milk programme in Mexico as far back as 1962. “Even in the 1960s our founder realized that helping our customers would lead to a profitable dairy industry which would ultimately benefit our business. Support for the dairy industry value chain is in our DNA,” Holm maintains.

The Bard MBA Sustainable Business Friday's Podcast Shake Shack's Jeffery Amoscato on Sourcing Better Burgers and More CSR Initiatives

SOURCE:Bard College Graduate Programs in Sustainability

DESCRIPTION:

Jeffrey Amoscato is vice president of supply chain and menu innovation at Shake Shack, which describes itself as a modern day roadside burger stand company, known for selling fresh, locally sourced food in sustainably operated kitchens.

Seven years after Amoscato opened the second Shake Shack in New York City, the company boasts operations across the United States and in six countries. How do you run an international operation but source from local farmers and artisan bakers?

Amoscato said one answer is that Shake Shack keeps the menu small so that the company's sourcing team can be engaged with artisanal and local suppliers. Its menu uses a core ingredient list of 55 to 60 items as staples and then regularly considers 300 or so specialty items.

"In order to be a part of each community, we commit to supporting local makers," he said.

Since 2012, Amoscato has been director of supply chain responsible for all purchasing, culinary and quality assurance functions of Shake Shack. This year he became vice president of supply chain and menu innovation.

This Q&A with Amoscato is an edited excerpt from a "Sustainable Business Fridays" conversation March 27 by the Bard MBA in Sustainability program, a graduate program at Bard College in New York. This twice-monthly dial-in conversation features sustainability leaders from across the globe.

How Cisco is following former CEO John Chambers's vision for corporate social responsibility.

DESCRIPTION:

By

Once of the most significant events in the technology industry in 2015 was Cisco's CEO transition from John Chambers to Chuck Robbins (disclosure: Cisco is a ZK Research client). One of the hallmarks of the Chambers-led Cisco was the company's mission to change the world. The company didn't put together its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs for marketing purposes or to drive sales. Instead, Cisco embraced CSR and its ability to make a difference because it was the right thing to do for everyone. I highlighted one such initiative in this post regarding Cisco bringing communications to disaster relief efforts.

DESCRIPTION:

At Time Warner Cable, diversity and inclusion are an integral part of our culture. We believe in an inclusive environment, where you can bring your whole self to work.  This extends into our work in the communities that we live in and serve.

For the second consecutive year, Time Warner Cable served as a major sponsor of the MLK Celebration Parade in Charlotte, North Carolina.  This event draws thousands of people to the center city to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  More than 50 members of our local employee networks and their families walked together to show our company’s support for diversity and inclusion and our commitment to giving back to our community.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. believed in celebrating and promoting the worth of every human being. In his pursuit of equal rights by nonviolent means, Dr. King encouraged diverse cultures to live together in a spirit of love, understanding and service to one another.

In that same spirit, Time Warner Cable employee volunteers came together to expand our community's observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Employee volunteers, along with their family memebers and friends embarked on the parade route and received cheers from the spectators.  Many employees remarked that it felt great to be a part of this special celebration.  Even the parade announcers were thrilled to provide a shout out to one of our employees “Hey, there goes my cable guy!”

SOURCE:Justmeans

DESCRIPTION:

Vocational training programs are typically viewed as a lesser option than universities. However, as university graduates struggle to find jobs, vocational training is becoming increasingly promising. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has repeatedly highlighted the “skills gap” between unemployed workers and job openings that require more than a high school education but less than a four-year degree.

JobTrain is a 50-year old nonprofit that is helping low-income people learn skills that lead directly to employment. The organization focuses on promoting economic equality through a combination of job training, academics and life skills to help disadvantaged people become self-sufficient.

Is a Perfect Pipeline Safety Record Possible?

“Not a scratch, scrape, puncture, or cut . . . we haven’t even sent anybody to the doctor.”

SOURCE:TransCanada

DESCRIPTION:

After 20 years, Tuscarora Gas Transmission's safety record remains unblemished
Every company’s goal is to have a perfect safety record. But is perfection really possible? In a word: Yes.

Consider Tuscarora Gas Transmission, an interstate natural gas transportation system operated by TransCanada in California and Nevada. After 20 years in operation, the Tuscarora pipeline has not only logged zero lost-time incidents, it hasn’t had a single recordable event.

“Not a scratch, scrape, puncture, or cut,” says Kevin Walker, a multi-skilled technician who has worked at Tuscarora since it went into service in 1995. “We haven’t even sent anybody to the doctor.”

Considering the rugged terrain, the safety record is astounding
Admittedly, at no point in its history has the pipeline had enough employees to field a football team, numbering between four and nine full-time employees at any given time over the last two decades. But given the nature of pipeline work and the rugged and often snow-covered terrain employees must travel every day to do their jobs, the record is nothing short of astounding.

“From the start of the construction planning phase on through to day-to-day operations, safety has always been a key focus for those involved with the building and operations of the Tuscarora system . . . It is nice to reflect back on the 20 years and recognize our efforts were worth it,” says David Montemurro, TransCanada’s management committee representative during Tuscarora’s early years.

Small team takes pride in ownership of Tuscarora's safety record
Tuscarora extends 229 miles (490 kilometres) southward from the Oregon-California border at Malin across mountainous northern California and into Nevada’s High Desert, where it interconnects with Paiute Pipeline near Wadsworth, Nev. The 20-inch-diameter pipeline has operational capacity of 236 million dekatherms per day and serves a mix of utilities, industrial facilities and casinos.

“It has always been a small team,” says Terry Wolverton, currently senior community relations advisor for U.S. Projects, who also worked for Tuscarora from the very beginning. “Our office was about the size of a lunch room. We didn’t have layers of management. Our communications were direct, and our leadership was excellent.

“We would work together to lay out a plan, we communicated it fully, and then we executed effectively and efficiently. No matter what it was, you had your hands on it. You felt the pulse,” Terry recalls. “And there was never any allowance for cutting corners.”

“It’s like pride of ownership,” Kevin says of his relationship to Tuscarora. “We have a lot of skin in it. And not just on the operations side. We operate in small, rural communities, and we’ve built a lot of trust over the years with local citizens.

Safety is not about records, it’s about day-to-day performance
“Given the length of the pipeline and the small crew, we spend a lot of time working alone,” says Kevin. “But any one of us, we always know where the other guy is headed. We know where people are, and they know where we are. You always know the team has your back.”

So, is perfection a reasonable expectation?
At TransCanada, the reality of the overall safety program — from extensive training to proper planning and efficient execution — is that we can and will do better. Our overall philosophy and approach to developing corporate safety targets is to set them such that we drive continuous improvement year after year.

TransCanada’s concern for safety is not limited to its employees and contractors. The company’s goal is to ensure that our pipeline and energy facilities operate safely every day and that the public, our employees and the environment are never negatively affected by an incident involving our assets.

Davos 2016: CSR Takes Mainstage to Address Major Global Issues

SOURCE:Cone Communications

DESCRIPTION:

On the heels of COP21 in December is the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF), taking place this week in Davos, Switzerland. As world leaders in business and government convene to discuss the most pressing global economic issues, social and environmental topics have taken center stage.

WEF's survey of 750 experts put climate change as the biggest threat to the global economy in 2016 – the first time the issue has catapulted to number one. The report highlights the ripple effects of climate change on critical economic factors. "Climate change is exacerbating more risks than ever before in terms of water crises, food shortages, constrained economic growth, weaker societal cohesion and increased security risks,"says Cecilia Reyes, Zurich's chief risk officer.

As conversations at Davos continue over the weekend, many businesses and world leaders have already come to the table with solutions to the world's biggest economic threats. Here's a short roundup of commitments announced this week:

  • Microsoft made a major announcement in advance of the WEF's annual meeting of its new three-part initiative to provide cloud computing resources to serve the public good. The commitment was kicked off with a $1 billion donation of Microsoft Cloud Services "to serve nonprofits and university researchers over the next three years."
  • A new global campaign was launched Thursday at Davos to reduce global food waste levels by half by 2030. The campaign, dubbed Champions 12.3 after the SDG Target 12.3, was formed by a coalition of 30 leaders from business, government, UN agencies, foundations and NGOs, including food industry giants Nestle, Unilever and Tesco. Additionally, The Rockefeller Foundation separately unveiled YieldWise, a "$130 million program to tackle hunger by slashing food waste."
  • Leonardo DiCaprio took the stage to accept the WEF's Crystal Award but at the same time announced a $15 million donationto environmental projects from his foundation. DiCaprio lauded leaders for the Paris agreement, but also cautioned of the "irreversible damage" of climate change if the world fails to follow through on the pact.

Harlem First: Symposium

Healthcare professionals and East Harlem residents come together through social impact design.

SOURCE:School of Visual Arts - Design for Social Innovation

DESCRIPTION:

January 25, 2016 /3BL Media/ - MFA Design for Social Innovation at the School for Visual Arts is bringing diverse voices together to understand why our neighborhoods are not as healthy as they should be, and what we can do about it.

We know that being healthy depends on more than seeing and being treated by a doctor. Many other factors in a neighborhood have an effect. But healthcare professionals, city agencies, nonprofits, and the community they serve often communicate poorly. Opportunity is missed.

On Monday February 1, join an extraordinary panel of speakers in a conversation that involves all the people involved in health in this community in finding solutions.

Panel:
– Cyrus Vance Jr., Manhattan District Attorney;
– Dr. Prabhjot Singh, Director of the Arnhold Global Health Institute;
– Clyde Williams, community leader, public servant, and Congressional candidate;
– Rob Carmona, co-founder of Strive;
– Carmen Quinones, East Harlem resident and tenants’ activist.

Moderator:
– Cheryl Heller, Chair, Design for Social Innovation at SVA

DSI students, together with Harlem residents, have been mapping an East Harlem neighborhood, looking at factors beyond the traditional purview of the medical profession, such as crime, homelessness, open space, poverty, availability of healthy food, and gentrification. On February 1, health professionals, politicians, local agencies, designers, community leaders, Harlem residents, and data scientists will gather to discuss their insights. What does it takes to improve the culture of health in the Harlem community? We view this initial effort as the beginning of a process that we hope to take to other neighborhoods and other cities in the U.S.

Where: SVA Beatrice Theater, 333 West 23rd Street
