DESCRIPTION:

2019 promises to be an exciting year for clean tech. An increasing number of countries, companies and regions are embracing sustainable energy generation and the landscape is rapidly evolving.

Here are 6 renewable energy trends to watch in the coming year.

5. Big Commitments

An increasing number of corporations, cities and countries are embracing emissions reduction targets and climate action plans to meet the goal of limiting the rise in global temperature.

To date, over 100 cities worldwide report that at least 70 percent of their energy production is from renewables, and more than 40 are currently operating on 100 percent renewable electricity. Hundreds more have pledged to work towards the goal of energy generation that is 100 percent based on renewables. Recognizing their impact on climate change, 158 companies have also committed to transitioning to 100 percent renewables.

Many of these corporations and municipalities were inspired to make these commitments after the 2015 Paris Agreement. With the new information provided by the IPCC’s 2018 report, we can expect to see an increase in bold commitments to switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.

The collaboration underscores the important role of architects and designers as professional leaders whose design expertise can positively impact human health in the buildings and communities where we spend our time.

“The WELL Building Standard™ (WELL™) has generated global momentum across the real estate continuum because its scientific and technical research underpinnings help the AEDC community efficiently and seamlessly prioritize human health and wellness in the spaces where we work, live, learn and play,” said Rick Fedrizzi, Chairman and CEO of IWBI. “The rapid adoption of WELL in more than 40 countries has occurred because of the expertise and resources of our professional communities, who are advocating – and delivering – places and spaces that can help people thrive.”

As part of this joint initiative, SLD restates its commitment to promote both WELL and WELL v2, the newest version of the global rating system, and to pursue WELL throughout its project portfolio. SLD has over 600 architects and designers with projects in more than 100 cities throughout the world, providing a significant platform for WELL’s global uptake, establishing SLD as a leader in wellness real estate.

IWBI will facilitate necessary training opportunities for members of the SLD team to become WELL Faculty™ to enhance the WELL-related capability and expertise of SLD’s officers and the design teams. In addition, IWBI and SLD will support SLD’s professionals in their pursuit of WELL AP credentials.

“A good design is not only about aesthetics, but also taking environmental protection, health and social issues into consideration, to create space that foster well-being for all” said Kenny Sui, CEO of SLD.

Launched in October 2014 after six years of research and development, the WELL Building Standard is the premier standard for buildings, interior spaces and communities seeking to implement, validate and measure features that support and advance human health and wellness. More than 260 million square feet are currently participating in WELL across virtually every building type in 43 countries around the world.

Voting for the Dell Circular Economy People’s Choice Award is open starting January 7!

SOURCE:Dell

DESCRIPTION:

Each year in January we turn our eyes to the Swiss chalet of Davos, home to the World Economic Forum. They gather the foremost political, business and societal leaders to discuss and shape solutions for positive change. Their group of Young Global Leaders (YGL) focuses on overcoming barriers that stand in the way of progress, and one of their projects has been to support the annual Circulars Awards, recognizing excellence and achievement in the Circular Economy.

We believe that it takes ingenuity and collaboration to drive the changes needed for a switch to the circular economy, and the Dell Circular Economy People’s Choice Award is intended to recognize just that. Along with the YGL, we are presenting six exciting companies with innovative approaches. All are deserving, so we want the public to help choose.

And that’s where you come in.

Voting at The Circulars will begin January 7. Here are the six choices:

DyeCoo Textile Systems

The dyeing process for textiles can be resource intensive, but DyeCoo has a solution that is water-free and uses no process chemicals. Instead, it actually uses carbon dioxide. Their process is a highly efficient, closed-loop system. By using CO2 under high pressure, they are able to transfer dyes easily and deeply into fibers without generating waste water. They estimate that one of their dyeing machines can save 32 million liters of water (that’s like 55 million Venti coffees).

Ecoware

The world is waking up to the challenges created by single-use plastics, especially in food packaging. Ecoware has an innovative solution to that, converting agricultural waste into disposable food packaging that uses no plastic, is 100% compostable in home facilities and biodegrades in 90 days in soil. Their containers are also oil- and water-proof for up to an hour. In addition to avoiding the use of fossil fuels for plastics, Ecoware’s ability to source from agricultural waste gives Indian farmers an opportunity to monetize something they were previously burning, which contributed to air pollution.

Geetanjali Woollens

Ever wonder what to do with old clothes? Discarded clothing occupies 10 percent of landfills. While donation is a great first bet, like other things, these can (and should) be recycled if they are no longer used. Geetanjali begins by taking bales of recycled clothing and sorts by type and color. They are then able to reprocess them in a highly efficient system that uses no dyes, no chemicals and little water. They even have a rainwater harvesting system that serves 35% of their production needs.

Grover

While many electronics have become indispensable to daily life, there are others that fill a niche or provide a great service that you may want, but not use all the time. Enter Grover – helping break the link between ownership and use. By providing a subscription service for electronics, they allow you to get the equipment you want for specific uses without having to buy it. Vacation of a lifetime coming up? Maybe rent a high-end camera and even a drone. Since 2015 they have recirculated more than 50,000 devices.

Triciclos

Triciclos believes waste is a consequence of consumer habits and bad design. More than a recycling company, they are tackling waste at the system level, providing reverse logistics, materials tracking, collection of recyclables via multiple models, design consulting and even environmental education programs. They operate the largest network of recycling stations in South America and have diverted 33,145 tons of recyclable material from landfills.

ZigZag Global

For retailers without strong reverse logistics and returns programs, ZigZag can provide that as a service. They help retailers reduce waste and cost by facilitating exchanges, returns, resale, remanufacturing and recycling – all seamlessly integrated with their customers’ e-commerce sites. Their global reach and multiple warehouse sites enable them to leverage technology and scale to ensure those returns are handled in the most sustainable way. For example, they are able to collect and consolidate returns for batch processing.

Each of these companies is bringing innovation and excitement to the circular economy. Now it’s your turn to decide which one should be named the Dell People’s Choice Circular Economy Award winner!

Vote here starting January 7.

Join the Family Fund and help alleviate global poverty through entrepreneurship

SOURCE:Whole Foods Market Foundations

DESCRIPTION:

Whole Planet Foundation invites you to join the Family Fund, a program that leverages the power of community to alleviate global poverty for families through entrepreneurship.

When you join the Family Fund, you fund an average first microcredit loan for one or more women entrepreneurs around the world. A microcredit loan enables an entrepreneur to start or expand a home-based business, but it also does so much more than that—it creates opportunities for a family each month.

Lifting Her Family

A microcredit loan may be the boost a family needs to afford healthcare for an aging parent, or to pay school fees for every child instead of just one. Financial capital makes it possible for a woman to realize her potential and become self-sufficient, even in parts of the world where she would otherwise be denied that opportunity. And it allows her to leave a legacy for her children in the form of a business, like Bianca, an entrepreneur in Chile.

The average first loan for an entrepreneur in Whole Planet Foundation’s portfolio is less than $200 USD. Please consider giving the gift of opportunity by joining the Family Fund. For as little as $16 a month, you can fund one family’s first loan. Or, you can make a one-time gift to fund microcredit. Since Whole Foods Market covers the foundation's operating costs, 100% of your donation goes directly to funding microcredit, and since microcredit loans are repaid and reloaned in the local community your impact is amplified over time.

Make your donation and start the new year by joining the Family Fund and making a difference each month. Together, we create opportunities for families around the globe.

SOURCE:FCA US LLC

SUMMARY:

  • LEDs with wireless controls now at two manufacturing facilities, enabling automated energy management
  • More than half of its manufacturing facilities, two Mopar Parts Distribution Centers and 87 dealerships now lit with LED fixtures

DESCRIPTION:

January 7, 2018 /3BL Media/ FCA US LLC rings in 2019 on a bright note after installing intelligent lighting systems in two metro Detroit operations, Jefferson North Assembly Plant and Warren Stamping Plant, helping drive down energy costs by at least 50 percent and improving employee productivity by making the spaces responsive to the needs at each workspace.

"Making the move now to the most advanced LED lights with wireless control capabilities gives us the ability to track our real-time consumption and react, respond and customize our energy use quicker than ever before," said Kevin Dunbar, corporate energy manager at FCA US LLC. "LEDs also mimic natural light, which has shown to increase our employees' comfort and productivity. This transition is just one element that helps modernize our operations while also reducing our environmental footprint and operational costs."

The sensors "talk" with each other via a wireless network and can adjust illumination based on occupancy needs or the intensity needed in the specific location. The sensor-based digital network creates a smart building that runs on autopilot, reducing operating expenses and increasing business efficiencies for the operations teams.

Additional HighLIGHTS
The Company has now retrofitted more than half of its manufacturing facilities, two Mopar Parts Distribution Centers and 87 dealerships with more than 35,000 LED fixtures:

  • The 5-million-square-foot Sterling Heights Assembly Plant in Michigan is lit by 12,000 LEDs, making it one of the largest LED retrofits in the manufacturing industry. The installation reduced energy use by 34 percent.
  • Through the "FCA Bright Initiative" launched in 2017, the Company has now transformed 87 FCA dealerships with indoor and outdoor LED lighting solutions to provide customers and dealership employees with a brighter and safer environment at night. The initiative can slash a dealership's total electricity costs by up to 50 percent.
  • The two newest U.S.-based Mopar Parts Distribution Centers in Romulus, Michigan, and Winchester, Virginia, use more than 2,800 LED lights.

Commitment to Energy Reduction
By 2020, FCA aims to achieve a 30 percent reduction in energy consumed per vehicle produced versus 2010 at mass-market vehicle assembly and stamping plants worldwide. By the end of 2017, FCA's energy consumption was down 24 percent compared with 2010.

This Holiday, a Resilient Florida Panhandle Rebuilds

After wildfires and hurricanes, volunteers come together to get back to normal

SOURCE:Duke Energy

DESCRIPTION:

The holidays might look a little different in the Florida Panhandle this year. In June, a wildfire gutted 800 acres in Franklin County, and then in October, Hurricane Michael brought devastation back – even more so for neighboring counties Bay and Gulf.

Houses were destroyed, the landscape was changed and hundreds lost their jobs.

The towns that dot Florida’s curved coastline along the Gulf of Mexico thrive on tourism and natural resources – in Franklin county, 87 percent of the land is protected for conservation, and there are fewer than 12,000 residents. Tourists flock to the area to enjoy pristine beaches, deep-sea fishing and renowned seafood. When Hurricane Michael sped through Apalachicola, Port St. Joe, Mexico Beach and Panama City with 155 mph winds, much of the area was destroyed. Despite tremendous loss, residents in this tight-knit, rural area have pulled together to overcome and be thankful this holiday season.

It’s times like these that remind Franklin County Commissioner Joseph “Smokey” Parrish what a mentor once said about crisis: You can’t fix everything at one time.

“When you run through something like this, you don’t look at the total picture. You pick out one little piece and fix that. Then go get you another little piece and work on it,” he said. “You just keep working until you get back to a sense of normalcy.”

All across the Panhandle, volunteers are doing just that.

Joe Taylor, executive director of nonprofit Franklin’s Promise, is one of many who have been busy since the day the hurricane hit. He leads the local Conservation Corps, a program that trains 18- to 25-year-olds for careers in forestry and disaster response while earning their high school diplomas.

Because they learned to use chainsaws and work with FEMA and law enforcement, they were ready to respond. With help from other nonprofits like Rotary International, which supplied tools and volunteers in the two weeks following the hurricane, Corps students logged nearly 1,400 hours of work – the equivalent of 35 weeks – delivering food, clearing debris, and removing trees from senior citizens’ houses and covering them with tarps until they could be repaired.

“We even put up a dog pen for a lady in Mexico Beach. She lost her husband, her business and her house — all she had was two dogs, so we made her a place to put her dogs,” Taylor said. “Whatever was turned into us is what we did.”

Duke Energy has sponsored Conservation Corps since it was founded in 2015, and Taylor said that early support allowed them to be ready this year. With every person they helped, their capacity to help others grew. The first person they helped was Lori Switzer, who runs the food pantry. By removing the tree that fell on her house, Switzer could open the pantry and provide food for about 400 families two days after the hurricane.

She opened extra mobile food pantries in Gulf County, too, because it was hit even harder than Franklin County.

“When you see it over there, it’s like, ‘Wow, we thought we had it bad,’” Switzer said. “I think we have a lot of people who are a little down about it, but we’re strong. We get through stuff. Everybody came together. They did it with the fire, and it’s the same way with the hurricane.”

Switzer’s roof is still tarped because contractors are slammed with requests, and when she looks off her back porch, she sees the remnants of 25 splintered pine trees. She’s been so busy she hasn’t had time to get a chainsaw and clean her own yard. But she plans to get to it soon. Taylor is looking to his next projects, too.

Working with Toys for Tots and the school board, he plans to donate toys, coats and shoes for about 700 children before Christmas. In the new year, he and other volunteers, including some of the Gulf Corps students, will help a faith-based organization rebuild hurricane-damaged houses for senior citizens.

Taylor grew up in the area they’ll rebuild, and while the little concrete houses of his childhood are gone, he has hope that some of the things that make the Panhandle distinctive will remain.

“This area is worth investing in,” Taylor said. “There’s something really special about this part of Florida that I don’t think exists in many other places.”

Parrish said he agrees because coming to Franklin County is like landing on an airplane – everything slows down. There aren’t big-box stores, movie theaters or chain restaurants, but the crime rate is low, the environment is pristine, and no matter where you came from, he said, people are going to shake your hand.

“They’re resilient people. All they need is a little guidance.”

Duke Energy's support in the Florida Panhandle
Duke Energy supported the Florida Panhandle after the Eastpoint fire with a $25,000 donation and a $250,000 relief fund after Hurricane Michael. Here are a few of the organizations that benefited:

Volunteer Florida Foundation: $50,000 supported the Florida Disaster Fund, Florida’s official private fund to assist communities as they respond to and recover during times of emergency and disaster. Duke Energy was the first organization to give to the Volunteer Florida Foundation.

Franklin’s Promise Coalition: $32,000 provided safe access and repair to homes of senior citizens and those with disabilities. The funds made it possible to purchase supplies for repairs and the costs to bring the Youth Conservation Corps from Mississippi and Pensacola, Fla., to assist. In addition, it provided 2,000 meals to Franklin County residents who were impacted by Hurricane Michael.

Operation BBQ Relief Meals to Port St. Joe: The grant provided 600 meals for the residents of Port St. Joe on Oct. 15 and 16 delivered by Duke Energy employees in Tallahassee.

Humane Society: Animal shelters were filled with pets, many of which experienced injuries during the storm or lost their owners. Franklin County Humane Society and St. Joseph Bay Humane society each received $1,000 for the animals’ medical bills.

DESCRIPTION:

Join us for our SDG Leadership Forum for Sustainable Cities and Communities (Goal #11) on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 from 12:00pm-2:00pm EST.

As part of GlobeScan's ongoing series of online dialogues, TD is co-shoting the SDG Leadership Forum for Sustainable Cities and Communities (Goal #11). The forum offers an opportunity to explore the challenges facing North American urban centres and will discuss the critical role that green infrastructure and urban green spaces can play in achieving the UN’s ambitious 2030 goals. It will explore how various stakeholders can help create safe and accessible spaces, ensuring sustainable, inclusive and resilient cities.

REGISTER FOR THIS UPCOMING EVENT

Today, North America is the most urbanized region worldwide, with 82 percent of its population currently residing in urban areas. This number is expected to steadily rise as population growth and economic progress continue to drive urban development. However, urban living can often limit access to nature and public spaces, and can also increase exposure to environmental polluters.

Growing urbanization will require significant transformations in the way we build and manage our urban spaces to ensure our cities are resilient, inclusive and sustainable. Through green infrastructure and green spaces, the quality of urban living can be enhanced, by promoting resilient and sustainable lifestyles for communities.

In this live, online, text-based discussion, hosted by TD Bank Group and GlobeScan, we will discuss:

  1. Examples and best practices for implementation of green infrastructure in cities.
  2. The barriers and solutions to creating inclusive and accessible urban green spaces.
  3. Collaborative opportunities for accelerating progress on SDG 11 and creating resilient, accessible, and inclusive cities.

Through the online conversation, participants will have the opportunity to engage with a community of experts. We will learn from each other, inspire fresh thinking, and share best practice examples and solutions to turn ideas in to action.

On January 16, from 12:00pm – 2:00pm EST we’ll be joined by a diverse line-up of guest contributors with different perspectives and expertise. Some include:

TD is supporting this forum as part of its new corporate citizenship platform The Ready Commitment, which aspires to link its business, philanthropy and human capital to help create a more inclusive and sustainable tomorrow.

This year’s winners focus on offering sustainable and nutritious options and bringing opportunity to their local communities, while last year’s winners concentrated on social impact and innovation. “BlueBud raises awareness for brands who offer delicious foods that also incorporate environmentally and socially responsible missions,” said Sophia Mendelsohn, head of sustainability and ESG, JetBlue. “As these small businesses learn directly from JetBlue leaders, they will be able to use this framework to grow responsibly while scaling up to potentially take their products from farm to tray table or terminal.”

This year’s winners include:

  • Eat Your Coffee (Boston) – Eat Your Coffee creates energizing snacks and bars made from simple ingredients. Supporting Fair Trade coffee farmers, the caffeinated snack bars are non-GMO, vegan, gluten-free, kosher and made with organic dates, oats, and roasted coffee. JetBlue’s BlueBud Mentoring Program – The small companies selected for the program focus on responsible, intelligent, informed and/or homegrown business. These budding brands will participate in an extensive business mentorship which includes:

  • A look at JetBlue’s unique and award-winning culture starting with a trip to the company’s orientation at JetBlue University in Orlando to understand the airline’s mission and values
  • Access to JetBlue leadership and business partners in Strategic Sourcing, Corporate Social Responsibility, Sustainability, Corporate Communications, Marketing, Brand and Onboard Product Experience
  • Travel to/from New York City for sessions with JetBlue leaders and business partners

Although participation in the program does not guarantee that a brand’s products will make it onboard, JetBlue works with each mentee in a variety of other ways. Previous BlueBud participant Small Axe Peppers Hot Sauce (formerly Bronx Greenmarket Market Hot Sauce) is available in JetBlue’s home terminal –T5 at JFK Airport – in the New York Minute shop, a concept store that offers Empire State-produced products. In addition, after a year of mentorship, Hot Bread Kitchen learned what it takes to collaborate with an airline, and then pitched their product. JetBlue was so impressed, they offered the bakery’s challah rolls on its Mint brunch menu for several seasons. Luv Michael has also partnered with JetBlue to provide snacks and information on job opportunities for those on the autism spectrum during one of JetBlue’s Blue Horizons for Autism airport rehearsal events at JFK Airport.

JetBlue's supplier diversity initiative works to provide a wide range of business partners with equal access to opportunities. BlueBud is an example of the airline's inclusive mindset -- impacting people, planet and profits. The airline's hope is to create greater access to JetBlue opportunities one BlueBud at a time. Sappi awards Ideas that Matter winner $50k grant to help pediatric burn patients

SOURCE:Sappi North America

DESCRIPTION:

For nearly two decades, Ideas that Matter has been a cornerstone in Sappi North America’s corporate responsibility efforts. By supporting the work of designers who are creating print communications to help solve complex social issues, Ideas that Matter is an important participant in the design for social good movement.

As part of its 17th annual Ideas that Matter program, Sappi North America awarded a team of students from ArtCenter College of Design a $50,000 grant to continue the development and implementation of “The Healing Tree: The Safe Niño’s Project.”

The Healing Tree project supported COANIQUEM: a nonprofit treatment center located in Santiago, Chile, that treats thousands of pediatric burn survivors from across South America, and provides therapy, education, and housing for children and their families.

The project is a comprehensive system of design and paper elements that transformed the treatment center into a magical land where patients go on a journey to find The Healing Tree. It included the development of a 30-page storybook, patient passport system and environmental graphics to guide these individuals through their burn treatment plans.

During their recovery, patients are accompanied by two characters from the storybook, Camilla and Lucas—who are also recovering from burns — as well as a cast of animal characters.

A series of 10 custom-made activity booklets contextualize the storybook’s elements and provide fun, simple activities that help the patients engage with their healing process. The animal characters that Camilla and Lucas meet along the way each represent a different treatment department.

As children visit a new department, they collect an activity booklet, which also serves as a reminder for the next visit. The booklets are collected into a passport holder that has an empty tree on the cover, meant to be stamped with new leaves upon a visit to each department. Patients earn prizes, like animal toys and books, after a certain amount of leaves have been stamped onto their passport’s tree.

The environmental graphics developed for the center help expand the storybook’s world. Two of the main treatment hallways and several therapy rooms depict scenes from the storybook by using a strategically developed wayfi nding system and the friendly characters from The Healing Tree.

In July 2017, with the help of the Ideas that Matter grant, the remaining environmental graphics were installed and 200 copies of the completed storybooks and 1,000 passports were delivered to COANIQUEM, bringing The Healing Tree to full implementation.

Why Clean Energy Investments Should be Part of Your Risk Management Strategy

$

SOURCE:EDF+Business

DESCRIPTION:

There’s a new way to approach energy risks that should interest business leaders who navigate today’s changing economy.

Is your corporate risk management strategy considering these three realities, and how to respond?

  1. Energy prices are volatile and hard to predict

Energy prices fluctuate so knowing when to lock in the best price, and for how long, is a perennial challenge for businesses. Unless, that is, you consider signing a long-term Power Purchase Agreement with an energy provider that specializes in predictable renewable energy – or install your own clean energy infrastructure.

Both options will help you avoid that energy price roller coaster and likely save your business money over time.

PPAs have become mainstream in recent years as the renewable energy sector continues to expand; corporate PPAs grew 20 percent over the last two years to 5.4 gigawatts procured in 2017. Just this month, for example, an Illinois wind farm signed a $325-million contract to sell energy to Bloomberg LP, General Motors; and to 340 Starbucks stores through Constellation, an energy services company.

On-site renewable infrastructure is another option businesses use to hedge against energy risks. So far, Fortune 500 companies such as Target, Walmart and Apple have installed solar arrays or roofs at nearly 2,000 individual project sites in the United States to secure stable and lower energy prices.

Such investments are not limited to huge companies or brands. Increasingly, smaller companies are also making on-site installations to reduce uncertainty and bills.

  1. Energy choices, competition go hand-in-hand

Knowing how to maximize the benefits of your energy choice requires a thorough analysis of your energy needs and appetite for risk.

A PPA procurement deal, which can last up to 30 years, gives a business a predictable power rate that will often beat the prices fossil-fueled sources can offer today. New and innovative PPA models are now opening up more possibilities for companies that opt for this solution.

By locking in the price, however, a PPA can preclude future savings should the price of, say, wind power drop significantly over the next five or 10 years. Such a structure may suit a company with few competitors that seeks stability, even if it means it won’t have access to lower prices down the line.

Those facing fierce competition, on the other hand, may seek to avoid a PPA, as would companies specializing in energy-intensive production where power prices have a direct impact on production costs. They would more likely want the option of regularly renegotiating their power purchase deals to take advantage of better rates.

Businesses for which a PPA is a poor fit may instead take the other route: a large capital investment in on-site renewables. In addition to shielding the owner from energy price volatility, such infrastructure investments can benefit from millions in federal and state tax credits and maybe generate new revenue by selling power back to the grid.

Even so, there can be some challenges.

  1. Business needs and policies must be aligned

To this day, nine states still won’t let a company go directly to a third-party provider of renewable energy to negotiate a PPA. Thirty-one states don’t offer state tax credits for solar panels, and seven states have yet to let companies sell power back to the grid – to mention a few barriers.

If your company has offices or plants in any of those states, you may be out of luck – unless you get on the phone and start knocking on your utility’s and policymakers’ doors. That’s what companies such as Walmart are doing successfully to gain broader access to renewables.

Some of our largest brands are also trying to break down barriers to PPAs in Europe, where the market is largely untapped. The message for anyone struggling with limited energy options is that applying pressure on state and national lawmakers is good for business and our economy.

Because when companies manage risks, everybody wins.

Program Celebrates the Legacy of Medtronic Co-Founder Earl Bakken and Other Outstanding Patient Advocates Around the World

SOURCE:Medtronic

SUMMARY:

The Medtronic Foundation Bakken Invitation program recognizes and connects people who “live on, give on and dream on” through their advocacy, contributions to innovation and volunteerism after overcoming health challenges with the help of medical technology.

DESCRIPTION:

MINNEAPOLIS and KONA, Hawaii, January 9, 2019 /3BL Media/ The Medtronic Foundation today announced 12 individuals from around the world as recipients of the 2018 Bakken Invitation. This Medtronic Foundation program recognizes and connects people who “live on, give on and dream on” through their advocacy, contributions to innovation and volunteerism after overcoming health challenges with the help of medical technology.

Named after the late Earl Bakken, who understood the impact of medical technology on his own life and its ability to give years of “extra life” to a variety of philanthropic efforts, the Bakken Invitation was launched six years ago to connect empowered patients who affect social change, transform healthcare and inspire others. The 2018 honorees will convene today in Hawaii, Earl’s home in recent years for five days of inspiring workshops. During the multi-day retreat, they will receive leadership skills training, connect and share ideas with other like-minded individuals and be recognized for their achievements by the Medtronic Foundation.

This year’s recipients are from 12 different countries and represent multiple diseases and medical conditions. The 2018 honorees include:
  • Eduardo Caminada Jr., Brazil
  • Giovanna Campioni, Italy
  • Candice Coghlan, Canada
  • Amber Huett-Garcia, United States
  • Komal Kanitkar, India
  • Christine Katusiime, Uganda
  • George Kwayu, Tanzania
  • YongWoo Lee, South Korea
  • Roland Malkin, United Kingdom
  • Ashley Ng, Australia
  • Raican Dan Stoian, Romania
  • Rui Zhang, China
“I’m honored to participate in the Bakken Invitation as I believe in its mission to affect positive social change – only through collaborations such as these can we continue to make important strides forward,” said recipient Eduardo Caminada Jr. “Every day, I see the ways public education and awareness activities can make a difference not only in the minds of individuals to reduce stigma surrounding a disease, but also in influencing government and policy stakeholders.”

“The Bakken Invitation is just one example of how the Medtronic Foundation is empowering patients and elevating their perspectives and experiences,” said Paurvi Bhatt, Medtronic Foundation president. “We recognize that positive change in healthcare is only possible when the powerful insight, influence and skills of patients is put into action. That’s why we’re proud to equip these patients with tools to catalyze their work as leaders and further position them to transform healthcare in meaningful and sustainable ways for years to come.”

About the Bakken Invitation
The Bakken Invitation furthers the community-minded vision of the late Medtronic co-founder Earl Bakken. Bakken had a pacemaker, insulin pump and several heart stents, which he says gave him years of “extra life” to continue his community involvement. He regularly asked medical technology recipients, “What are you doing with your extra life?”

Since its inception in 2013, the Bakken Invitation has honored more than 70 individuals and invested approximately $1 million to support their work across the globe.

About the Medtronic Foundation
Medtronic plc is the sole funder of Medtronic Foundation, whose focus is on expanding access to quality chronic disease care among underserved populations worldwide, as well as supporting health initiatives in communities where Medtronic employees live and give.
