Make Goldcorp Safe Enough for Our Families. This is the standard we aim for and this commitment is one of our Six Pillars. It is this vision that is driving our safety culture and contributing to improvements in our safety performance everywhere that we operate.
It’s simple - we believe that if an employee considers a mine to be safe enough for his or her family, then he or she will ensure it is safe enough for Goldcorp’s collective family. We know we can only achieve this when each of us embraces this safety culture.
To do this, we provide the tools and training needed for continual safety awareness. Our Safety and Health strategy is embedded in our Sustainability Excellence Management System (SEMS) standards and is based on four main themes. These are:
Strong safety systems;
Integrate safety into business processes;
Personal safety accountability; and
Focused efforts to eliminate high-risk activities.
Our safety culture shines through in our annual Day of Remembrance, now in its third consecutive year. For one day a year, we shut down every single operation and office across the company to focus on safety. We also use this day as an opportunity to pay our respects to colleagues that have lost their lives or have been seriously injured on the job over the years. This day has a profound impact on our people and safety culture.
While we recorded many safety wins in 2015 – including a record-low Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) and All Injury Frequency Rate (AIFR) - we also suffered a devastating loss. Regrettably, we failed in our main objective of Zero Fatalities when we lost a miner at our Musselwhite mine site in Ontario, Canada and we are continuing to work harder than ever to ensure every one of our workers goes home safe, every day.
We are continuously looking to improve because we believe a strong safety culture is connected to sustainable productivity and that better safety performance makes us better miners. .
Innovation in safety doesn’t have to be at the expense of efficiency. A project at our Red Lake Gold Mines in Ontario where site managers introduced a Tele-Operated Remote Control System enabled the mine to increase production while also reducing safety-related incidents.
Culture isn’t something that simply exists – it needs to be nurtured through engagement and interactions. In July 2015, we launched a company-wide initiative to engage employees in safety and health discussions. The aim was simple - involve our people in the identification of safety practices and risks and the reception was fantastic with over 162,000 engagements recorded in less than six months.
Safety improvements are often a result of our people on the ground identifying opportunities to improve our operations. To make full use of this potential we need effective reporting and communication. We are always on the lookout for ways to improve how we investigate any Potential Fatal Occurrences (PFOs), with our safety leaders emphasizing the importance of prevention, mitigation and communication.
Safety is critical to us because our people are our strength – today and in the future. Of all our company values, none is more important than safety: no ounce of gold is worth risking a life or injury. Our number-one objective, above anything else, is to have Zero Fatalities.
