DESCRIPTION:

Over the last year, we have made great progress toward our goal of creating sustainable value in the communities and environments in which we operate. Still, there’s always room for improvement and we know that for every achievement, there are new challenges coming our way.

This year’s sustainability report featured a new section dedicated to our sustainability challenges. Acknowledging and addressing these challenges reflects our commitment to transparency and sustainability excellence in everything we do.

1. Ensuring our people work in the safest mines possible is our number one objective. Mining is inherently risky, but new technologies have the potential to help us improve our safety performance even further.

2. Environmental stewardship is a top priority for us moving forward. The availability of water, rising greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and increases in energy costs are key issues that have our attention and we are committed to managing our environmental impacts and working with stakeholders on innovative solutions for better environmental management and mine reclamation.

3. We are continuously working to improve engagement with our stakeholders. We can’t operate without the support of communities surrounding our mines. While it has not always been easy, our proven commitment to learning from and working with our partners and stakeholder groups, particularly at a community level, has helped us gain trust and ensure we maximize the benefits of our operations.

At Goldcorp, we view challenges as opportunities to improve our business. Market volatility has prompted a greater focus on financial discipline, improved efficiencies and better cost management. We’re also finding new ways to use energy more efficiently, including the use of renewable energy. For example, at our Cerro Negro operation, we’re doing a pre-feasibility study for a wind farm and we’ll continue to research alternative sources of energy in the coming years. Planning ahead is key to addressing challenges and that’s exactly what we’re doing with our Water Stewardship Strategy. We’ll continue to closely measure progress against our water milestones to ensure we are managing water in the best way possible.

We faced a number of challenges last year and we know we’ll be presented with new ones in the future – and we’re ready to tackle them. We will continue to communicate our progress – and our setbacks - in a transparent and open manner and will continue to refine our policies and practices for environmental stewardship; improvement of our community relationships; and will work to ensure the health and safety of our employees, contractors, partners and neighbouring communities.

Goldcorp is committed to transparency and open communication and we welcome any feedback about our programs, or ideas on how we can improve our sustainability reporting. Your inquiries may be directed to: SustainabilityReporting@goldcorp.com
