Amway Corporate took part in United Way’s Day of Caring on September 11 with more than 145 employee volunteers sharing about 555 hours of their time with the local community.
2015 marks the 10th year Amway has participated in Day of Caring at locations throughout West Michigan. During this year’s gathering, volunteers met 50 second grade students from Sherwood Park Elementary at the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum where they enjoyed free play time together. They also went to the Grand Rapids Public Library where the students had story time, arts and crafts activities and a scavenger hunt with their mentors for the day.
Forty other volunteers went to the Franciscan Life Process Center in Lowell, Michigan.
“We helped with landscaping, trimming bushes and trees, clearing out invasive species and generally doing beautification work on the grounds,” said Bryleigh Loughlin, volunteer coordinator for Amway Community Relations.
Still more volunteers went to Camp O’Malley, a Boys & Girls Club of Grand Rapids project that offers young people the learning and fun that comes with a summer camp experience. Amway volunteers cleaned the cabins and restrooms, pulled the docks out of the water, and did some painting and repair of the nature lookout decks.
The fourth project of the day was at Camp Manitou-Lin, a project of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids in Middleville, Michigan. Volunteers there, too, cleaned cabins and restrooms, and also cleaned horse saddles and other riding equipment.
“It’s really inspiring the things you can accomplish in a single day when you get a motivated group of volunteers together,” Loughlin said. “We like to get involved with projects like this where we can make an impact close to home.”
