Across Norfolk Southern’s operating territory – from Kansas City and Atlanta to Chicago and Ohio – representatives from state and federal environmental agencies support the railroad’s efforts to reduce locomotive emissions.
They have teamed with NS to fund emissions-reduction technology NS calls the ‘Sleeper’ – a plug-in heater that warms a locomotive’s engine and allows it to be cut off in freezing weather when not in use.
NS is installing the wayside Sleeper system in rail yards as part of a public-private partnership to help communities reduce diesel emissions. Learn more about why NS’ public partners are excited about the technology here.
