Booz Allen Hamilton was a Platinum Level Sponsor for Alabama’s 2016 Future City Competition, held in January at the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL. Future City, a yearly event that invites middle school kids to participate in the engineering design process - starts with a question: how can we make the world a better place?
To answer that question, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future that showcase their solution to a citywide sustainability issue. Past topics include stormwater management, urban agriculture, and green energy. This year’s topic: waste management.
At this year’s event, students presented their solutions via a virtual city design (using SimCity); a 1,500-word city description; a scale model; a project plan, and a presentation to judges at Regional Competitions. Booz Allen’s Robert Kincade and Matthew Meko, Senior Associates in the Huntsville office, served as judges for the “Best SimCity Name” award. Bob and Matt interviewed over 24 teams of middle school students from throughout the state of Alabama who created and presented their concepts for what future cities will look like via large table top displays.
During the Future City competition, participants get prepared to be citizens of today’s complex and technical world as well as drivers of tomorrow.
