Jan Shumate, Director of Plant Engineering at Eastman, has been honored with the Women in Manufacturing STEP Ahead award.

KINGSPORT, Tenn., March 10, 2016 /3BL Media/ – The STEP (Science, Technology, Engineering and Production) Ahead award is given by the Manufacturing Institute to honor women who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in their careers and represent all levels of the manufacturing industry, from the factory floor to the C Suite.
“Jan has provided the strategic vision, leadership, and daily management needed to convert Eastman’s Plant Engineering group from an organization supporting a single site to an extremely capable, agile and prepared team that now supports our many sites around the world,” said Mark K. Cox, Senior Vice President, Chief Engineering and Manufacturing Officer.
Shumate will receive her award in April when the Manufacturing Institute recognizes 130 recipients of the STEP Ahead Awards in Washington, D.C.
“These 130 women are the faces of exciting careers in manufacturing,” said Jennifer McNelly, executive director, The Manufacturing Institute. “We chose to honor these women because they each made significant achievements in manufacturing through positive impacts on their company and the industry as a whole.”
Shumate is a native of Kingsport and a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School. She received her undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University, her master of industrial engineering degree from the University of Tennessee, and her master of business administration from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. She has had a variety of roles during her 25-year employment at Eastman.
In her role as director of Plant Engineering, Shumate leads a team of Eastman engineers that provide global support for the company’s 50 manufacturing sites. Their work ensures the continued safe and reliable operation of Eastman’s facilities.
Shumate also works on recruiting high quality engineering talent to build a workforce of diverse skills, experiences and worldviews that will enable Eastman’s future success.
