IT Paves a Pathway Out of Poverty in South Africa

A Cisco Networking Academy Success Story

SOURCE:Cisco Systems Inc.

DESCRIPTION:

When a young girl in South Africa discovered her passion for technology, she found a way out of poverty for herself and her family. Ntombozuko (Soso) Luningo guides a new generation of students toward economic empowerment and self-reliance with the Cisco-sponsored Learnership program using the Cisco Networking Academy curriculum.

IT Training Center Awakens a Passion for Technology

Born in an impoverished village, Soso found her way to an IT center, learned technology and discovered a world of opportunity. Today, she is an IT expert, inspiring teacher and mother, living in a Johannesburg suburb.

“When you grow up in a township and go to school there,” explains Alfie Hamid, Cisco Corporate Affairs Regional Lead, “you generally do not have access to 21st century schooling, and, with your financial situation, you cannot afford university, your only opportunity is for menial labor and the poverty spiral continues.”

Classes at a training center built by the Nelson Mandela Foundation awakened Soso’s passion for technology. CIDA City Campus provided the opportunity for a college education, and a path to a better life. By 2007, Soso had earned a bachelor’s degree and a Cisco CCNA certification at CIDA.

After graduation, Soso became the youngest IT technician and only woman on the IT staff at Queens Casino in Queenstown. Within 3 months, she was promoted to Network Administrator and team manager, providing IT training to her co-workers. With her salary, Soso built a new home for her parents in the village where she grew up. Then, she gave up her private sector job to become a Cisco Networking Academy instructor at CIDA ICT Academy.

Building a Successful Academy Program

Students who enroll in Soso’s classes face the same challenges she did, coming from disadvantaged backgrounds with few resources to invest in themselves or their education. Soso shows them a path to a prosperous, fulfilling future, one she traveled herself.

When she thought the Cisco CCNA Security curriculum could be a competitive differentiator for CIDA and a next step for her students, she took the course on her own time and convinced the director to adopt the curriculum. Her students have achieved a 100% pass rate on the certification exam. Soso also led the charge to make the CIDA ICT Academy a Regional Cisco Networking Academy by recruiting 6 new academies to offer the Cisco IT Essentials course.

Sustaining a Successful Career in IT

In 2014, Soso became a mother and an instructor with the Learnership program at CTU Training Solutions where she can have a powerful impact on the next generation.

She has found a way to balance teaching and family responsibilities with the demands of her new job. “It’s easy for me to juggle between family and work life because they keep locking horns,” she said. “I treat the new CTU students the way I'm treating the new member of my family. I keep in mind that I need to help them get used to my way of teaching while I get used to their ways of learning. I'm hoping to take these students, especially the girls, to even greater heights than CTU and Cisco is hoping for.”

When asked what she would say to young men and women who are considering a IT career, she doesn’t hesitate... “You can do it, go ahead.”

Aramark, New York Mets Recognized for Food Waste Minimization Efforts

SOURCE:Aramark

DESCRIPTION:

Aramark, Citi Field's food and beverage provider, and the New York Mets have been recognized by the New York City Department of Sanitation with a "Certificate of Amazing Participation" for their continuous support and exemplary commitment to their organics program.

“We are honored to be recognized alongside the Mets, our longtime partner, for our responsible food management practices at Citi Field that promote a sustainable environment,” said Carl Mittleman, President, Aramark’s Sports and Entertainment division. “As an industry leader, we are committed to and take great pride in championing innovative solutions that impact the communities we serve and inspire others to make a difference.”

“The New York Mets together with Aramark are thrilled to be doing our part in reducing the incredible amount of waste that currently goes to landfills every day. It takes strong teamwork to improve our environment and we, along with our fans, are proud to step up and encourage others to join us," said the Mets organization .

Food scraps and other organic waste make up more than one-third of all commercial waste. Diverting this material from landfills means it can be used as a natural soil amendment through composting or clean, renewable energy through anaerobic digestion. Keeping food scraps and other organic waste out of landfills also reduces the emissions of methane gas, a harmful greenhouse gas and major contributor to climate change.

About Aramark's Waste Minimization Efforts

Across Aramark operations, we’ve implemented practices that decrease the impact – and the cost – of waste, as part of our Green Thread , our environmental sustainability platform. Starting with what we purchase, and continuing through to how we dispose of waste, we work hard every day to reduce our environmental footprint.

As a global food service company, we're proud to be recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as a Food Loss and Waste 2030 Champion for our commitment to reduce food loss and waste in our operations by 50 percent by 2030.

Our approach to managing food waste is aligned with the EPA’s food recovery hierarchy, and with our “behind the scenes” food management programs, we make sure we are ordering accurate amounts of food, preparing and serving it in a way that limits waste, and tracking our progress.

Sometimes unique circumstances, like an event cancelled at the last minute, or an unexpected snow storm that closes dining facilities, causes us to make other plans. In those cases, we implement our food donation program to provide safe, unserved food to hunger relief agencies in our communities.

We partner with our clients to create robust recycling and composting programs to keep waste out of landfills. We also offer them solutions that help reduce waste at the source – like reusable to-go food and beverage containers, and “trayless” dining programs, which are proven to cut down on the amount waste created.

Royals star shines bright for Big Brothers Big Sisters

SOURCE:Major League Baseball Players Trust

DESCRIPTION:

World Series champion, All-Star Game MVP, three-time Gold Glove Award winner and 2017 World Baseball Classic champion — first baseman Eric Hosmer has developed an impressive baseball resume since joining the Kansas City Royals in 2011.

But in addition to making a big difference for the Royals in recent years, the 27-year-old has also made a positive and significant impact in the Kansas City community.

Hosmer has been heavily involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City (BBBSKC) since 2011. He was originally introduced to the organization — whose goal is to match “children facing adversity in one-to-one, life-changing friendships with adult volunteers,” according to the official website – by fellow Kansas City sports star Eric Berry of the Kansas City Chiefs.

It was the way his older brother, Mike Jr., treated him as a kid, however, that convinced him to become even more involved with BBBSKC.

“I just realized how good I had it growing up,” Hosmer told reporters. “There was always someone there, when Pops was at work, to go outside and play catch or just to guide me around throughout the day. This is an organization I’ve been with a long time and they’ve been great with us.”

“I think I just learned from how he treated me and how he accepted me as a friend: not like I was the annoying little younger guy,” Hosmer said in an interview in June 2016.

Hosmer has worked closely with the organization to find new ways to inspire others to get involved. In 2012, Hosmer spoke at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City to help recruit Big Brothers, Big Sisters and Big Couples through a program called “Step Up to the Plate with Eric Hosmer.”

In 2015, Hosmer started “Step Up Big with Eric Hosmer,” where he pledged to donate funds for every double he hit that season. In 2016, after pledging to donate $1,169.08 per double, he raised over $30,000 for BBBSKC.

NRG Energy | Key Issues Assessment Following GRI Framework

$
0
0

SOURCE:NRG Energy

DESCRIPTION:

NRG follows the GRI Framework to report on issues of importance to the company and its stakeholders. As part of a re-evaluation of our sustainability strategy,
in 2013, we engaged a third party to facilitate a formal assessment to determine these key issues. Our initial assessment identified 49 issues as important to stakeholders and the NRG business. Selecting which of these issues to report on then involved a series of internal workshops and fed into the process for feedback received from regular engagement with our external stakeholders (see key issues matrix). We revisit this assessment annually to determine the content for the Sustainability Report. Key issues for NRG as delineated by the GRI Standards for 2016 include:

  • Biodiversity

  • Compliance

  • Effluents and waste

  • Emissions
  •
Employment

  • Energy
  •
Occupational health and safety
  •
Procurement practices (supply chain)
  • Water

We believe these aspects accurately represent the organization’s significant economic, environmental and social issues at this time. They also align with the key themes of the NRG corporate strategy and are
the focus of our e orts to create robust targets and goals. These topics aim to cover all NRG brands and businesses. We do recognize, however, that some of these topics are more relevant to certain parts of the organization than others. For example, most of the environmental disclosure is focused on our power-generating fleet since that is where we have the ability to make the most impact through carbon-emission reduction and more efficient water use. Relevant financial implications, as well as a discussion of risks and opportunities associated with some of these issues, can be found in Part 1, Item 1A in our 2016 Form 10-K. Additional financial statements or equivalent documents can be found here.

Key issues assessment

To formally establish the process of defining key issues for sustainability, in 2013, NRG engaged a third party to conduct a preliminary formal assessment of key issues with internal stakeholders who represented diverse parts of our organization. Their input was solicited through surveys and an in-person workshop. In parallel, we prioritized our key issues according to a high-level, qualitative rating using existing NRG data and industry and external stakeholder resources.

In 2016, we revisited our key issues matrix to ensure that the findings remained relevant to NRG’s current business and operating environment. During this process, we interviewed more than 100 internal and external stakeholders, and their results were synthesized into an executive briefing document to share with NRG leadership. For the purpose of
the Sustainability Report, these findings were also compared with external best practice publications on metrics, such as the Electricity Producers Research Institute Metrics for the Electricity Producers Industry, the Financial Stability Board’s Task Force on Climate Related Financial Disclosures, and the SASB Electric Utilities Standards.

The end result confirmed that the key issues NRG was reporting against were indeed the most pressing issues for the company at the time, and they remain relevant today.

The resulting matrix (see chart) illustrates what social, environmental and economic issues may have the greatest impact with regard to our business and stakeholders.

Today, we use this independent analysis to better inform business decisions and shape our voluntary reporting process. We’ll continue to develop and re ne this assessment on an annual basis, engaging a broader audience of internal and external stakeholders.

Key findings from the initial analysis include the following:

  • Energy reliability, availability

Company’s Third Wind Project Will Help Meet Customer Demand with Renewable Energy

SOURCE:Consumers Energy

DESCRIPTION:

Consumers Energy broke ground on its third wind energy project, Cross Winds Energy Park II in Tuscola County’s Columbia Township.Michigan’s largest energy provider is working with lead contractor White Construction, which has started building access roads and will begin constructing concrete foundations within two weeks for the 19 new turbines that will be 499 feet tall and generate up to 44 megawatts. White Construction was the contractor for Consumers Energy’s Lake Winds Energy Park near Ludington, Mich.

“We are committed to safely building and operating this wind park, and we are urging motorists in the area to be alert for and practice caution around large construction vehicles as they operate in Tuscola County,” said Dennis Dobbs, vice president of enterprise project management, engineering and services for Consumers Energy. “Production from this next phase of Cross Winds Energy Park helps us continue to meet customer demand sustainably with safe, reliable, affordable and clean energy.”

Phase II construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2017 and go into commercial operation in January 2018. The project will:

  • Help Consumers Energy meet the state’s new 15 percent renewable portfolio standard by 2021 and help the company achieve its proposed plan to help large businesses that choose to go 100 percent renewable.
  • Be a total investment of $345 million comprised of 81 wind turbines total – including the first phase of Cross Winds – and be capable of producing up to 155 megawatts of renewable energy, enough to serve about 60,000 residents.
  • Employ 150 workers, part of Consumers Energy’s commitment to add $5 billion into the state’s economy over the next five years through the Pure Michigan Business Connect by seeking goods and services supplied by Michigan companies.

In addition, Phase III plans have been approved for Consumers Energy’s Cross Winds Energy Park by Columbia and Akron townships. This final phase of the park is expected to go into commercial operation in 2020.

Construction materials and equipment will be transported into the project area in Columbia and Akron townships mainly using M-24/Unionville Road north to Hoppe Road.

Consumers Energy, Michigan’s largest utility, is the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy (NYSE: CMS), providing natural gas and electricity to 6.7 million of the state’s 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.

Sandoz Expands Partnership with World Child Cancer, to Help Children Access Treatment in Four Developing Countries

Expanded partnership to help "even the odds" of survival for children with cancer in the Philippines, Myanmar, Mexico and Ghana

SOURCE:Novartis

SUMMARY:

  • Expanded partnership to help "even the odds" of survival for children with cancer in the Philippines, Myanmar, Mexico and Ghana
  • In developed countries, the survival rate for childhood cancer is 80%, while in developing countries it can be as low as 10%
  • Sandoz is committed to working with key stakeholders to pioneer novel ways of expanding access to healthcare

DESCRIPTION:

Holzkirchen, July 25, 2017 /3BL Media/  -  Sandoz today announces the expansion of a pilot project with leading charity World Child Cancer, aimed at improving access to treatment and optimizing survival outcomes for children suffering from cancer in four developing countries.

Jon Rosser, Chief Executive of World Child Cancer, said: "It is just unacceptable that children's odds of surviving cancer depend so much on geography. In developed countries, 80% now survive, but in developing countries it's still only about 10%. World Child Cancer is changing this - in our programs we can raise that survival rate to around 60%."

He added: "We are very excited at this growing partnership with Sandoz, which will enable us to prevent so many children dying without even a diagnosis and without effective pain relief. We believe that all children, regardless of where they live, deserve better."

The agreement builds on an existing partnership with World Child Cancer in the Philippines, where Sandoz is funding staff training needs and helping children to access diagnosis and subsequent treatment. It expands the partnership to cover three additional countries across three continents: Ghana, Mexico and Myanmar.

These particular projects were chosen because of the gravity of the situation in the four regions concerned: across all four, an estimated 6000 children develop cancer each year, but only approximately 20% even receive a diagnosis, let alone effective treatment.

Peter Stenico, Sandoz Head of Oncology, said: "These projects will take simple, pragmatic measures to attack cancer where it is most vulnerable: among children suffering from forms of cancer that are often absolutely treatable. Together with World Child Cancer, we believe we can make a real difference by enhancing the standard of care for children in these countries and, ultimately, improving childhood cancer survival rates."

The expanded partnership highlights Sandoz's commitment to work together with key stakeholders worldwide to expand access to healthcare. As a targeted philanthropy project, our work with World Child Cancer complements our broader Novartis Corporate Responsibility efforts across a number of lower income countries.

About World Child Cancer

World Child Cancer helps children with cancer access diagnosis, treatment and support in developing countries where the chances of survival can be as low as 10% compared with 80% in the developed world.

World Child Cancer does this by building partnerships between doctors and nurses at hospitals in the developed world who provide training and mentoring for doctors in developing countries. It also helps with transport, food and accommodation costs to meet the wider needs of families who have a child with cancer.

World Child Cancer programs run in some of the poorest places in the world. Last year it helped over 5,500 children but, with an estimated 200,000 unnecessary deaths each year, there is so much more that needs to be done.

Parental Leave Is A Hit

$

SOURCE:PNC Financial Services Group

SUMMARY:

According to a Pew Research Center survey, 73% of Americans believe that if the government were to provide paid parental leave it should be available to both parents; 35% of adults ranked expanding access to paid family leave as a priority.

DESCRIPTION:

In 2016, PNC announced a change to its parental leave policy for all new moms and dads. Eligible new parents of any gender can now receive full pay for six weeks in the year following a baby’s birth. Here’s one dad’s take on how the leave helped his family.

For five weeks last summer, as Mark Bezilla was bonding with son Penn, the new dad became a pioneer of sorts. He took paid time off after his wife returned to work, using a new parental leave policy to be with his baby without affecting the family’s finances.

It was a summer of hard work and magic moments that Bezilla says he’s grateful to have experienced, a special time he’ll always remember.

“I will say that I did gain an appreciation for how much time, effort, care and love goes into being with your child 24/7,” said Bezilla, vice president and program manager for PNC Grow Up Great. Some of his friends, also first-time dads, were a bit envious. “

None of my friends outside of PNC have a policy like this at their workplace.

Before the new policy took effect in January 2016, Bezilla would have been eligible for one week parental paid time off. Adoptive parents would receive two weeks paid time off, and the birth mom was eligible for up to eight weeks of short-term disability.

Now, all eligible parents—birth and adoptive—receive six weeks off at 100% pay. Eligible birth moms also receive 10 weeks of leave under the short-term disability policy at 100% pay.

Since the policy took effect Jan. 1, 2016, the number of fathers taking paid parental leave at PNC has increased significantly, according to newly-compiled PNC data.

"We Live This"

While Silicon Valley firms and many up-and-coming companies now offer parental leave for all new parents, Bezilla wasn’t expecting anything more than one paid week of leave for himself. He had to reread the new policy a few times before he realized he was eligible.

“Quite frankly, I was shocked,” he says.

I sent my wife a text immediately. She was over the moon. This not only affected me – it affected my family.

Leave policies that cover both new moms and dads are gaining popularity as a way to recruit and retain talented employees. In a 2017 Pew Research Center survey, 74% of those surveyed said employers that provide paid leave are more likely to attract and keep good workers.

The Pew survey found a lot of support for paid leave for new parents. Specifically, it showed 82% of Americans think mothers should have paid maternity leave; it’s 69% for dads. The report noted that most fathers now take an average of just one week following the birth or adoption of a child.

PNC vice president Barb Trant, who oversees absence management, recalls that employee response was swift and positive. “It was a good feeling to offer something to new parents that clearly shows we value and support our employees and want them to stay with PNC when they expand or start their family,” says Trant.

We talk about helping employees with work/life balance, she says, and this policy proves “we’re not just talking the talk. We live this.”

Bezilla says adding a new baby to the family is a challenge, but it allowed his family time to adjust. “It’s an added benefit that allowed me to have that important one-on-one time with my son at a very early age,” he says. “It was amazing.”

Student Entrepreneurs Put the Internet of Everything in Service to the Blind

A Cisco Networking Academy Success Story

SOURCE:Cisco Systems Inc.

DESCRIPTION:

As cities build sensors and data systems into infrastructure, a team of innovative Cisco Networking Academy students realized that a blind person’s white stick could become a smart stick. With mentoring and support from Cisco, they developed a prototype device to transform the urban experience for people without sight.

When Devices, Data, and People Connect

Students in an entrepreneurship class at University of Lorraine in Nancy, France were stumped when their professor told them about Le Défi Cisco a competition to apply technology to social and environmental issue. Lucie d’Alguerre thought of her uncle, who is blind. She imagined a fully connected city that could transmit information to the white cane many blind and visually impaired people carry. Her professor connected her with 4 other Cisco Networking Academy students to develop a pitch for the contest.

A Formidable Team of Engineers

Thirty teams competed in the first round of Le Défi Cisco. On Team Handisco, Florian Esteves and Mathieu Chevalier took the lead in developing the technology. Lucie used her connections to build partner relationships with the City of Nancy and Valentin Haüy, an association for the blind. Jonathan Donnard managed communications with Cisco, while Nicolas Frizzarin took responsibility for the financials and the business plan.

Their idea is to integrate Internet of Everything technologies inside a single cane. According to Lucie: “Handisco is a start-up whose purpose is to help blind people move within cities, thanks to a cane, with greater independence and safety.”

“They’re engineers. They got excited about connecting the city with 5000 access points,” explained Rémi Philippe, a Cisco solution architect involved with the startup community in Paris who guided the team as a technology mentor. “We pushed them to define investment, timelines, and look at potential competitors. No other company is focusing on the white stick, so they could get traction and solve a true problem using existing infrastructure.”

A True Social Innovation

The Handisco stick uses proximity captors with ultrasonic waves like those in a car bumper that emit a sound when backing up. The waves sense a wider spectrum of area and convey the information to the user through vibration. GPS technology provides local guidance, prioritized for real time conditions and a sightless traveler.

“I’ve seen 50 or 60 startup pitches, and no one did anything like this,” said Rémi Philippe. “It’s the best example I’ve seen of the Internet of Everything. It’s a dumb device that becomes smart when it connects to all the other data and devices around it to make a real difference for the user.” In the final round of Le Défi Cisco, the Handisco team received the top honor and a €70,000 award.

From Student to Startup

What began as a class project turned into an innovative startup. Five students who barely knew each other are now business partners. With the prize money from Le Défi, they founded Handisco and began to pitch the company to investors. The team has developed a sustainable distribution and pricing model to move into other markets such as the elderly. In June 2014, the group received the Pepite Award, a National Prize for Innovation from the French Ministry of Education, and were honored to meet with French President François Hollande.

Remi Sedilot, a Cisco sales manager who advised them in business plan development, believes they won the contest because they are solving a real problem with a true innovation that builds on existing infrastructure. “They were very precise and consistent about what they would like to do,” he said. “They are proposing to help blind people gain autonomy and benefit from services created for other purposes.”

The next wave of technological innovation will come from the connection of people, process, data, and things to the Internet: the Internet of Everything. For students today, the opportunities and potential for innovation are limitless and daunting.

Is WELL Certification Worth It for Developers?

Some argue that buildings with healthy features command up to a 20 percent rent premium over market rate, in addition to savings on operational costs.

DESCRIPTION:

Creating healthy workplaces is the next step in the evolution of office building sustainability. “Health is a key component to real estate for the long-term,” says Rachel McCleary, Urban Land Institute senior vice president, who heads the organization’s healthy buildings initiative. She points out that a healthy workplace requires a building to meet certain performance standards, and certification is based on testing.

The healthy workplace movement got a boost a few years ago when the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) partnered with the International Well Building Institute (IWBI) to streamline certification processes and minimize paperwork to achieve both Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and the WELL certifications simultaneously.

Launched in October 2014, WELL has registered or certified 450 projects, encompassing nearly 100 million sq. ft. of space in 27 countries, including 361 office projects.

“The rapid expansion of WELL worldwide underscores the fact that building and business developers, owners, and operators are taking notice of the need to harness the built environment as a tool to promote human health and wellness,” says IWBI President Kamyar Vaghar. He notes that IWBI is seeing increasing interest from core and shell building developers looking to achieve WELL certification, as well from tenants looking for buildings that facilitate a healthy fit-out.

Honesty Over Perfection: Navigating the Urgency of Climate Change in Shifting Times

$

by Lara Birkes, Vice President, Chief Sustainability Officer at Hewlett Packard Enterprise

SOURCE:Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE)

DESCRIPTION:

We are living in a time of uncertainty, unpredictability and anxiety. So much has changed, and so fast, from policies and legislation to government priorities, leadership and expectations. At the same time we have a surge of unprecedented activism from all corners of the world. Some in reaction to change, others in support of more change. All this tells us is that we no longer can define what “normal” means.

At this month’s DS Virgin Racing Innovation Summit, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to address business leaders, including Sir Richard Branson, to discuss using our collective resources to develop long-term solutions to the demanding environmental and social challenges we rapidly face.

The business community has reached a tipping point in terms of action. We need to stop merely talking about the private sector’s role in addressing climate change, and shift the conversation to the “how”. How can we do more? How can we be more transparent? How can we learn from some, while helping others along?

And we have reached a tipping point for our own practices too. Business can no longer focus on just individual corporate action, we need a broader diaspora of stakeholders. Our supply chains, our partners, our customers – the list goes on. Now is the time for scalable, industry-wide action.

Thankfully, when it comes to preserving our planet, on the whole, governments, businesses and citizens have been bolder, more aggressive and even heroic in their commitments and actions of late. We’ve seen companies over the past few months have an incredible impact, benefiting their company and society.

Former GE CEO, Jeff Immelt expressed this sentiment at the recent Minds + Machines digital industry event in Paris, saying that companies “…must be resilient and learn to adjust to political volatility all over the world. Companies must have their own ‘foreign policy’ and create technology and solutions that address local needs for our customers and society.”

The recent announcement of the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris climate accord has spurred an eruption of support across the board. Local governments are forming alliances in order to set up their own climate agreements and sustainability goals; and businesses such as Amazon, Under Armour, Apple, Nike and HPE have shown support for clean energy regulations, and reaffirmed their commitment to combat climate change.

In this new landscape, people don’t expect companies to be perfect, but they do expect them to be honest. Having humility, sharing challenges, lessons learned—even in light of failure—makes corporations relatable actors in a crisis which confronts us all.

It is better to set ambitious targets for ourselves, fall short, and endeavor to understand why, then to not set far-reaching targets in the first place. After all, if this were easy, it would have been done already!

The private sector really does have a powerful role to play in positively shaping our future and driving climate action. Let us put innovation at the heart of this transformation, working to ensure we meet the energy demands of tomorrow while addressing the needs of our customers, and society concurrently.

I look forward to continuing discussions like these as businesses and citizens forge a new path forward, developing unique and innovative ways to address the challenges we all face.

Replay the livestream from the DS Virgin Racing Innovation Summit. Held at Brooklyn’s New Lab ahead of the New York Formula E race, the event saw 250 of the most influential business leaders, entrepreneurs and media discussing the role business can play in tackling climate change.
